It has been coming for a while I think. I can't think of another Western country that is this divided.

When the Occupy movement started in the States seven years ago, I remember thinking it would require an incubation period similar to the French Revolution and that we would eventually see some serious action with huge consequences at the end of it. "The French Revolution was a period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France and its colonies that lasted from 1789 until 1799," says Wikipedia. If the political upheaval went the same way as France, we would therefore see an American Revolution in 2021, which would have equally profound consequences. It would also trigger a world recession that would make the 2008 recession look like a walk in the park. Trouble has been brewing for a while, of course. If I were to suggest one action that started it, it would be Ronald Reagan's tax cuts that gave the US supply-side or trickle-down economics. That compares with the divide between rich and poor in France in 1789. Interestingly, the second amendment might actually come to fruition. That would bring joy to a lot of people in the southern states

What if the guns are the threat to the security of the state?

What if the guns are the threat to the security of the state? That is a given, in some quarters. I grew up with the understanding that the Second Amendment and its attendant rights were part and parcel of the need to continue to maintain an armed citizenry to protect, amongst other things, against the rise of tyranny in the state. Ergo, the 'security of the state' can be dispensed with as a limp excuse to maintain a tyrannical state subjugating the citizenry and eliminating our civil rights. We, the armed, must smash the state to save the state to be resurrected as the new American nation....a state. This all, of course, degrades to "those who have the guns, and are willing to use them, have the rights" while those who don't have guns have no rights and often end up dead when they exercise those rights they think they have. Mao was right, all political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.

I don't think we expect civil war to occur these days in first world countries - oh, not counting Northern Ireland.

What state did you grow up in? The state being referenced was the national state, the United States of America. Reputedly, the founding fathers were so concerned with the possible rise of tyranny that they decided that letting the hoi polloi go around armed with the latest in firepower was how they dealt with their suspicions that such undereducated types might well be mislead by demogogues. *rolls eyes* As you might expect, those who might actually undermine the state and impose tyranny are the very folks who have been so adamant about arming every easily misled Tom, Dick, and Gomer, and then creating a veritable menu of 'others' which those easily misled might think of as imposing tyranny upon them, the "others"....of course, usually the "others" will start with restricting guns, which is how you will know that they are tyrants. Nice, eh?

Of course, the real "others" are those that construct conspiracy theories about the founding farmers arming the hoi polloi in case they were easily mislead by demagogues and became vulnerable to tyrannical leaders.

The schadenfreude is strong what with the recent revelations from the Butina case. It seems that the NRA, the stalwart defender of the Second Amendment rights, as they define them, has been made in to a conduit for illicit campaign funds funneled from a hostile foreign power to the Trump campaign.
So...The answer to your question of who has time for all that is....Putin and the Russian oligarchs. Amongst others, I'm sure.
Stay awake and pay attention, willya?
