Someone is being aggressively wrong about basic math on their own Facebook wall, and has amassed a plethora of agreeing commentors angrily shutting down anyone who tries to question the rightness of their position. In order not to explode, I am sharing here instead of getting angry at people who are not on my wall or harming me in any way. Sigh. (For reference, friend is insisting that the solution to the equation in this article is 1, and that they are breaking mathematical rules to try and explain their "wrong" answer: powerfulmind.co/math-equation/ ).

That kind of thing happens on Facebook. And EF is a good place to go instead.

Hahaha I saw something similar a few months ago which turned into a huge fight . I was right - I know damn well I was - but this one woman was insisting that she was and was insulting every single person who patiently tried to explain to her that she need to do the multiplication first. In the end it ended up with blockings all over the place

A huge fracas over the order of operations in mathematics? Sheesh....I thought that was something which could be easily settled by consulting an online source.
Man....and I thought I got involved in picayune squabbles.

And yet... the conversation on this person's wall, which I have still restrained myself from joining for my mental health, is all about how the online source(s) is/are wrong. Sigh.

Also I love the expression "picayune squabbles!"

Well, to be honest, there is no shortage of bad information online. Still, I'd think that a reputable mathametics source online would settle something like that. If the person persists in the face of that, insisting that ALL online sources are wrong, then send her to the library for an offline source. I'd walk away and avoid further contact at that point.

Also I love the expression "picayune squabbles!" Hey...It's a pastime! Everybody's gotta have a hobby. And, there's no shortage online.

People usually go away when I explain how to avoid such arguments, with clearly defined methods, such as Reverse Polish notation!

Well, for one, I doubt that would daunt Genie.

The person I was arguing with had it explained to them again and again with links and just didn't pay any attention.

If people don't want to hear something, they aren't going to, so don't bother with them (unless they're in high positions and have important decisions to make. That's the moment to skip them and go straight to the person above them in the hierarchy... (of course this doesn't work in the case of Trump))

RPN! I used to dislike it very much for use in my own calculators, although I understood how much easier it is to write a program that uses it. But at some point I got dissatisfied with the calculator on my smart phone, and went out to find a better. I settled for one that uses RPN because it had a lot of the functions I'm most likely to use, and apparently I've grown to like it. No parens, and the part I used to find difficult—remembering to enter the various terms in the right order—magically isn't difficult at all now.
