Whilst everybody else was wading around in crumpled gift wrap and has-been ribbons and bows, Swimmer and I went to the cinema.
We picked up on the latest in biopics: Vice.
It is about Dick Cheney. Really. It is the story of Dick Cheney's rise to ultimate world power through the US political system.
Christian Bale does absolutely amazing things to bring Cheney to the big screen. He was AWESOME. The mannerisms, along with the accent and actual physical changes, make his presentation credible. Sensational, even.
Other cast members are also ingeniously cast...Sam Rockwell as W: Amazing. Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney. The 'background' characters of Cheney's family, and the White House staffers like Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice are well cast. I had problem with seeing Steve Carrell in the role of Cheney's mentor, Donald Rumsfeld, but it was certainly workable. I found the pacing of the entire film to be a bit jumbled and fractured, with lots of 'flashbacks', and with bits like his terms as Wyoming's sole representative and as Secretary of Defense were minimalized to keep the film to workable length. Plus, the gimmick of the narrator fell flat for me, and confused me with its 'later explanation'....
