Other newspapers supported remain: The Guardian, The Financial Times, ...
The government spent millions of taxpayers' money supporting remain - £9 million on the leaflet alone - but none of that has to be accounted for as government expenditure wasn't subject to any limits and didn't count as part of the remain campaign's expenses.
How much did the Bank of England, the IMF, the society of motor manufacturers and traders, the CBI, and countless other organisations spend lobbying for remain? Again, they didn't have to account for it, and (generally) figures aren't available.

Other newspapers supported remain: The Guardian, The Financial Times, ... Those newspapers have tiny circulation lists compared with the Daily Mail and the Sun and they are not to be seen in pubs and cafes where many people form their opinions. It's true, the government spent millions but the Daily Mail and the Sun spent hundreds of millions, relentlessly day after day. How could the society of motor manufacturers and traders and the CBI lobby independently for Remain when their lobbying was made in newspapers dedicated to leaving the EU? Newspapers put the reports they want you to read on page 1 and the reports they don't want you to read on page 15.

"hundreds of millions, relentlessly day after day"
Really? That seems rather hyperbolic to me. I wouldn't have thought newspapers could afford to spend that much. Do you have a cite that has any evidence for the total amounts they spent during the campaign?

Do you have a cite that has any evidence for the total amounts they spent during the campaign? The combined revenues of the Daily Mail and the Sun is £2.3 billion per year. If 10% of each paper is dedicated to Brexit then the value of their campaigns over a 4-month period will have been £60 million. So tens of millions prior to the referendum rather than hundreds. But over the past three years since the referendum, the value of their Brexit campaigns will have been about £600 million if we assume 10% of the total value.

Whilst I don't approve of Brexit, the trouble is that the DM and its ilk would have been printing shite anyway. They did not get the revenue simply by printing Brexit shite, but by appealing to Breixteers.

Whoa...Not a word here for a month. What? Has everybody there decided just to ignore it and see if it goes away?
Has Britain left, or not?
More and more, it sounds to me as though what everybody would like is some kind of Schroedinger's Brexit, where the UK could simultaneously be both in the union and outside it.

We had local council elections on Thursday and I'm delighted to see that (a) the Conservatives lost more than a quarter of their councillors, and (b) the Liberal Democrats doubled their number of seats. The Lib Dems are the only party firmly in favour of Remain.

I had a postal vote, but after filling it out I failed to follow the instructions about NOT tearing off some tab before putting it into the envelope - so then it was ruined and I didn't vote.

Ruined just by tearing off a tab? I'd have stuck it back and sent it off anyway.

It was a flap attached to the inner envelope where you had to sign and fill in your date of birth. There was a row of perforations to tear the flap off, but the instructions (which I read too late) said that you must not do that. I thought they'd suspect fraud if it was torn off and then stuck back on, so I just threw the whole thing in the bin. I'll be more careful with my postal vote for the forthcoming EU election.

What the goat said. I am pissed off, frankly, by people who can't be bothered to vote, or who won't vote against the worst evil that there is. I have a horrid feeling that Trump may well be re-elected, largely because the dems can't get their fucking act together and stand together. Yeah, I get it - your candidate was not nominated (speaking generically here). You want Trump for another four years ? Go ahead and vote for someone who hasn't the first fucking chance of getting in.
Same goes here in the UK too.

I think the 'all politicians lie' is a naive and ignorant out.
Politicians, in our modern society, are a necessary evil. Somebody has got to do the job, and, if history is any guide, some do it better than others and some are absolutely miserable at it.
Frankly, given your statements in other 'political' threads, you haven't earned any respect for your political opinions, including this one.
And, for that matter, in my opinion, you misstated it. It should read, 'Human = lies, always'. That has been my experience.

That’s the way I feel about politicians and I was very clear on what I said. No misstating. Now if I get attacked for what i feel then I’m out of this.

Feel what you want, but that does not mean your feelings are useful, nor even correct.
And yes, you were clear and I'm sure you did not misstate. It was just an inconsequentially stupid statement to make. Glaringly so.
So...What is it that you do for a living? So we can all disparage your profession.
Take care you don't fall off your high horse.

Normally I’d keep my southern politeness but at this point I’m going to ditch that. Normally I would say well aren’t you just so special, isn’t that niiiice, or I bet you are such a wonderful guy under that avatar! Nope! Here goes! You asked for it but since your the abusive type you probably don’t know the smell of what around ya anyway.
I was not aware you’re such an enlightened individual. I was not aware that your personal opinions of said statement was an end all to the human race on such a benign comment. I wasnt aware that you were a God of manly physique and brain power oh be still my pee picking heart. But! Let me make myself perfectly clear on your disrespectful attitude towards anyone else view other than you own. If I need to ever have been insulted by a man and abused by him with such words that you have used ...... if I ever need a man to tell me what I think and have it crammed down my throat like a bully on a playground.... I would have stayed with my EX HUSBAND!
If I need to be called ignorant, naive, or any other demeaning word by you dearheart ..... if I need to be told I should not be respected by you .... if I need to be told my feelings on anything in the world don’t matter .... if you think I need to have your opions to make my cup runeth over... I would have not emancipated myself from my BIOLOGICAL FATHER in the 8th grade and taken his bullying, abusive ways.
God love ya, Respect is earned and frankly your respect for me is never in my equation. What? With six degrees I need not worry about your idea of respect since you show no one else respect. As far as my profession, should I need to tell you I will notify you. Sweetie, you are such a peach. I just love the high horse comment. Why isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black?
Thank for sharing! Bye now.

Intent upon demonstrating your idiocy ad nauseum?
B grade movie references don't really impress.
In case you lost your way, the topic is politics and you've convincingly demonstrated that you are an hysterical hyperbolic old drama Queen with absolute zero command of any aspect of that topic.
You are hurtling towards making yourself in to a complete fuckwit. Your choice....

So, you're going for the fuckwit. Fine.
My problem is you. Particularly when it comes to US politics. In an earlier thread, you bragged about your ignorance of political processes and dismissed political action, even basic voting, as a waste of time. That you come in here, in a political thread, and issue a blanket statement of such o'erweening stupidity about politics, when you had earlier paraded your ignorance, is not particularly a wise move. You have made it ever so clear that you know fuckall about politics, so whether you think politicians lie or not is immaterial. You don't know enough to even comment.
That you responded with a hysterical plea, citing all sorts of unrelated and entirely incoherent claims about your personal life and accuse me of being a 'bully' is preposterous. That is just grade-A, #1, finest kind bullshit. As long as you continue to dish out this kind of crap, you'll get something similar in return from me. I have little patience with arch claims of superiority like, "All politicians lie." If I knew your profession, I could point out where those of that profession also lie, misrepresent, and twist the truth. It seems to be a pastime in American society. Anybody involved in anything related to 'marketing' is, in essence, a paid liar. Since you are unwilling to state your own profession, I'll continue to think of you as a professional parasite, producing nothing and diverting others' efforts to support your waste of air.
And, I don't give a shit about your 'feels'. If you took the time to explain what you THINK, I might be more attuned to civil conversation. Might.
Yes, respect is earned. You haven't earned any. Zero.
As to whether I think the sun shines outta my arse, you've failed at so many assumptions, why stop with this one? I'm clearly more enlightened than you, but that is an exceedingly low bar.
Six degrees? In what? Cake decorating? Farting rainbows? Or, do states award multiple GEDs?
I could take your rant and deconstruct it line by line if you'd like, but I'd rather not waste the time, nor the crayons, on you.

Alright back to Brexit, dear old Boris, who unfortunately is quite likely to be our next PM, is saying we have to be out by October even if it means No Deal. This is going to be an economic disaster. I tend to scoff at people who hoard food or water or medicines or things but I must admit I am seriously considering it because I've no idea what is going to happen to the supply chain.

Not So Great [Mediocre] Britain will become the new Puerto Rico! Won't that be grand?
