One new thing my local Tesco have started doing which infuriates me is leaving bins of fresh food in the actual store, with staff constantly going round throwing away anything that looks less than perfect. It drives me nuts and I keep wanting to haul fruit out and tell em I'll give em half price for it but I doubt it works like that sigh

I wonder what they'd do if I just hauled something out and started eating it. Arrest me probably

I have retrieved many things from bins over the years, but not food. Reminds me of the episode of Seinfeld where George finds an éclair in the top of the bin, sat on a magazine, starts eating it and gets chastised by everyone.

I just saw some programme on TV about supermarkets, I don't know how accurate it all was but one thing they mentioned was that in terms of waste, there is actually very little because they have become so good at streamlining their supply chain and know exactly how much of a particular product is required. I can imagine that to be true because waste costs lots of money and in a business with small profit margins you can hardly afford to waste products by throwing them out.

Our Coop supermarket has a bargain shelf where dented cans, bruised vegetables and nearly out-of-date produce are placed. You can get some very good bargains.

Here that's called "dumpster diving". And those who do it are sometimes known as freegans.

While a few people can do it, I think things would grind to a halt if everyone tried to do it. Shops can't be expected to run (and couldn't last) just as a hand-out point.
One thing that I find amazing is the enormous amount of food that people buy and throw out. There was a documentary about it on TV recently where they managed to decrease a woman's waste by about £60 a week, which was about 1/3 of the food bill.

I doubt we waste even a tenth of that amount each week.

Most supermarkets discount food towards the end of the day. If I go to the Coop at the right time I can get some great stuff for pennies

Doesn't work like that here.

If you hit a supermarket at exactly the right time you can get things like mince beef, ready meals and sandwiches for ten pence each. You do have to be prepared to be fairly sharp with your elbows tho and have a good 'I saw it first' scowl

By pure coincidence, one of my podcasts was talking about this subject and it is specifically illegal in this country to remove things from people's bins, even though it is destined for landfill.

Does that mean my binmen should be in jail?

No, that would be like prosecuting the police for speeding when chasing criminals...

I was actually going by my local Coop late at night not long ago and noticed that the door to their bin area was open. I was seriously tempted to go in and start ratching Not even that I am desperate for food but that it just seems so wrong that perfectly good fresh food is in the bin. I asked the staff once whether they got to take any home when it as unsold (M and S lets its staff do this) but they said no .. they had the option of buying it at reduced price but could not just have it.. it goes in the bin. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous. That might be to reduce fraud whereby the staff pretend that it's unsaleable when it isn't.

I think it might be a case of "We can't sell this! The box has somehow, mysteriously, been damaged!"

By pure coincidence, one of my podcasts was talking about this subject and it is specifically illegal in this country to remove things from people's bins, even though it is destined for landfill. Same here. Yet, recently, a bag of old hay and guinea-pig poop was removed from our bin. We're suspecting our crazy neighbour.

Perhaps they were looking for food.

No, I think our neighbour just wants attention. And if someone was looking for food, why would they take a bag which clearly contained nothing but old hay and guinea-pig poop?

Because they think it smells so lovely? Or they wanted something to light the hearth?

Because they're nuts?
Still, I would not object if people came and stole my rubbish

Funny. I always think of tree nuts when I hear that someone is nuts. The idea of them being ground nuts seems just too far-fetched to me.
