When life feel crap to me, I immerse myself in such things as space documentaries....To me, this is comforting. Is religion just - the same thing?... And, ultimately, if it gets us through life then does it even matter? Sounds to me like the two questions are really the same. Or at least, I have the same answer to both. It doesn't seem to me that any religion (certainly not Christianity) has comfort as its main purpose. And if Christianity is true, its effect certainly is not comfort, at least not at first.
Put it this way: If an engineer in your village is trying to persuade her fellow villagers that the dam up above the village is in danger of bursting, her message is not one of comfort. On the other hand if her calculations enable everyone to fix the dam so they're safe again, comfort (emotional peace) may be a long-term result. But you don't start out with comfort; you start out wanting to know whether her claims are true.
And yes, that matters.
