Covid-19

Here the nurses are still paid badly and treated badly. Actually, I have heard that quite a few German nurses leave for other countries and better working conditions every year.
I have been wondering about how to deal with the whole thing long-term, especially regarding our little one. He isn't in day-care yet and the sports groups for small children that we pay for have been canceled until, at least, late August. Church will begin again in July (they're very thorough about making sure it is safe), but no room for parents with small children. I under stand that, but I'm not sure it's fair on our son to keep him entirely away from other children for possibly a year or more.
Recently we visited a friend with her 3-year-old and just this once, I let our little guy play with him, without social distancing. Officially it is allowed again and while I want to be careful, I'm not sure it's good for our little one to be more or less isolated for a year or more.
I know many people might criticize that.

There's a big push here from pediatricians to allow children to relax the social distancing measures since the damage to their emotional well being is potentially greater than the possible risk from Covid.

Same here. I think our little guy is just about young enough to be OK without other children so far, but I have read social distancing might be required until 2022 and that would definitely be too long. By then he would turn four years old and would probably have started suffering quite a bit from the lack of contact with other children. He is supposed to go to kindergarten in the mornings when he is three, but I'm hoping he won't have to wait that long for being in contact with other children.
Though at playgrounds here, there seems to be no social distancing whatsoever.

Well. Here it’s been business as usual. People that are wearing masks are starting to thin out. Not sure about that.

WG? I wants me to sign up for some subscription? Excuse me? Is there a paywall? A demand that you subscribe? Because it did not do that to me. I am not a subscriber to the Wall Street Journal. I've seen it repeatedly posted on Facebook, so, if you can't get it here, it'll prolly come round on the 'book. Unless, of course, the motherZucker decides you shouldn't see it.

I have noticed that it does that on my iPad but not my computer. The NY Times does it too.

Aha ... they know that people on iPads are used to paying for apps and content, being already conditioned to pay high prices for being part of the Apple family ;)

Contact restrictions (no more than two households being allowed to meet unless there is a special hygene concept in place) are likely to now remain until there is a vaccination against Covid-19. I kind of guessed, but have to admit it's still a bit daunting at times. Mostly, I miss church (our services have been on Zoom and will not start at church before July, and then I won't be able to take Malcolm since he would not remain in one place for an hour) and fencing (we meet outside when the weather is good to do individual exercise with swords, but for the past two weeks there has been heavy rain when we were supposed to meet and we will probably have rain and thunderstorms later today, so I expect today's exercise won't happen either) and Malcolm's sports groups are unlikely to start again anytime soon, meaning we will end our membership at Werder Bremen to save a bit of money. At the same time, last weekend hundreds were partying in the "Viertel" one of Bremen's night life areas) wiithout masks or keeping any kind of distance. And on the tram, young women who were dressed up for partying kept taking their face mask off to take sips of wine from the bottles they had brought.

Here they're lifting restrictions right left and centre. Gyms are opening, shopping malls are opening, even churches are opening! (Not mine though -our Bishop wants us to stay closed until September.) People are saying the government trying to give us a break before the second wave hits in the fall. Not smart...

The swords are not sharp. From what I have heard, authorities were there once and checked if no rules were being broken, but it was fine.

I didn’t think they were sharp. Typically isn’t there a small ball or rounded on the end.

Ours have rounded ends, yes. One could hurt someone with them, but one could probably hurt someone just as easily with a kitchen knife (and I'd rather carry my sword around than a sharp kitchen knife!).

On the subject of restrictions being lifted, I’m feeling more than a bit confused, anxious and irritated. I feel gaslit by the government - I don’t know what to think or believe any more.
I want to see my kids, my mum, my family. I want to go on holiday, visit my son in Poland, go to friends’ houses. Conversely I also want to live in a field, keep chickens and only see people at a distance*. If I think everyone else is having a normal life I’ll feel I’m missing out. But I don’t want to risk my health or my husband’s health. I’m already feeling like this has now become a huge game of chicken. Am I alone in feeling this? This is really affecting my mental health, which funnily enough was quite calm during lockdown. 🙁
*That’s pretty much my life anyway - getting more chickens next week, hopefully 😃

I don't blame you. The government is ridiculous.

I hear you. It's like we're living in 2 realities: this is a deadly disease which we need to protect ourselves and others from by isolation and caution; and I guess Covid 19 is over now and it's back to life as usual. I think governments are pushing for the second. But Covid 19 hasn't gone away! In fact, I just read a discouraging article saying that getting it and recovering only gives you immunity for a couple of weeks at best.

More as in chickens once more. I don’t currently have any, but we are about to buy a coop.
Not sure what I’ll get, but I like the sound of Buff Orpingtons if there’s any going locally. Maybe a Maran or Sussex as well.

I have to admit that some things are getting to me too. Less than two weeks ago, people went crazy in the party areas of the city, several hundreds, no distancing and police hardly did anything. Meanwhile, schools and day care are still limited when it comes to when they are open and who is allowed to go and when and aside from the playgrounds, there is nothing for little children. Generally, children seem to be the least important in this crisis and the younger they are, the less politicians care about them.
We're trying to figure out where we can and have to make compromises, especially for Malcolm. From Friday on, up to 10 people are allowed to meet again without social distancing.
I get that somehow, things have too go back to a certain kind of normal, but sometimes it seems like the priorities are all wrong.

I have to protect my health because I'm vulnerable whilst many young people, and a good many in their 40s and 50s, are completely blasé about the whole thing and are ready to party to midnight. Social distancing is very hot and miss in the shopping precinct and no one in Marple wears a mask or face covering. I'm staying at home, as I have been doing for the past three months. I could visit my local pub when it opens on Saturday, 4 July but I will probably give it a miss for a few days to let the crowds die down and for the landlord to settle into a routine. Hairdressers can wait.

I protect my health as well. I don’t much care what government says I’m staying home for the most part. I may Goto the Lake with the family but no one else will be around.

Maybe a Maran or Sussex as well. I can recommend Marans. I had the Black Copper version and they were mellow and stocky....good table birds as well as layers. I watched over some Lavender Orpingtons while they feathered out. I could not wait to get rid of that high-strung trio. Their eventual owner concurred with my negative assessment. But, as for the Buff Orps, I keep hearing the same thing; that they are great, docile birds. Like lap birds. Of all the birds I went through, the basic Rhode Island Red is a damned reliable layer and a level-headed flock animal. They exhibited good chook to human compatibility and mutual interest. Most of the superior layers I had (in terms of product output) were crosses of the Rhodies. We have hybrids here known as 'sex-linked', they come in black, gold, and red; their gender can be identified at hatch. This means that you can get 'sexed' chooks you can depend upon being hens, rather than the usual 'mixed run'. And, they lay more and larger eggs than most other hens available.

Julie - I feel utterly confused too. I've only been out once in the last three months but that's not unusual. I was thinking of going to visit my mum sometime though but - is it safe to do so? She's high risk and I would not want to infect her if I managed to pick something up.
