I'm an idiot when it comes to computers and IT. So I was a bit scared when I got this e-mail:
This is obviously a scam. I never watch pornography, so I have no "dirty little secret" to reveal. I am certainly not going to pay any sum to these bluffers.
The only thing that worries me is that the mail looked like it was from my own mail adress.

It's very easy to spoof emails so they look like they came from any email address you wish - and the process can be automated so that a computer can send many thousands of emails with apparently different senders to many different targets all generated from lists of email addresses that criminals pass around and sell.
Never trust any email that asks for money or personal information. Even if it appears to come from a friend or colleague, and it appears genuine, and you want to give what's been asked for, you should still check with that person by some other means (text, WhatsApp, phone call, or whatever) before agreeing.

My nephew got scammed with something like this when he was about fourteen. They actually opened up his webcam and put up a new window on his laptop saying he had been watching porn and would have to pay or they'd send the police round. He was really freaked out (as a fourteen year old it's actually not improbable that he HAD been watching porn ) but happily had the presence of mind to call my mum, who ascertained that it was a scam. It's a cruel thing to do though

I don't think the police would be interested unless you watched child pornograpy.

I had an email from someone claiming to be a lawyer years ago, claiming I owed Lidl Online 630 € which I had to pay right away. At that time I didn't even know Lidl Online existed! I was quite scared at first, but ignored it.
I'm pretty sure the scam with the porn website works well on people who have actually been watching porn on their computer! And I'm sure that's not a small number. Years ago a scam like that made it on the news.

There's also one that says people have been detected visiting hate sites or terrorist sites
