So amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, I've managed to acquire a new puppy. I'm sharing custody with my daughter eventually, but for now he's with me. He's a cutie --half poodle and half labradoodle. He's all black with a little white under his chin and on his back toes. But there was a reason I wasn't keen on a puppy (he was born Jan. 2) --lots of housetraining to do! And I need to discourage him from eating my couch. His name is Liam. The cats are not impressed!

I think so too. He had a big face off with my mean cat, Silk. Silk won. Now Liam whines fearfully whenever Silk comes close.

Today is a big day. Liam is going off to stay with Other Mommy! My daughter Natasha and I are sharing custody, but so far it's only me that has had him. Tasha works during the week (even now) and I do a lot of work from home, so she's basically the weekend mommy. She's finally gotten a crate, so she's anxious to spend time with her puppy. Honestly, I'll be glad for the break, although I'll miss him and worry about him...
I'm (oddly) looking forward to washing my floors.

Awww, the cuteness! He's got the kind of look that makes you forgive pretty much everything. This could lead to disaster in the future *insert ominous music here*

Snap!! 😁
On Friday morning I sneaked our at 5am to meet my friend (observing plenty of distance) and now have a 7 or 8 month old whippet lurcher called Dwtty (rhymes with sooty, means ‘little’ in Welsh). For a rescue she’s very cuddly and loves people. My friend is so grateful I was able to take her, she was getting desperate.
She’s much much smaller than my Kizzy and I realise it’ll take me a long time to get used to her (it’s made me realise how much I’m still grieving), but she’s here. 😊
How do I upload a photo?

Aw, how lovely.
You can upload your photos to Flickr, Instagram or any of a host of picture sharing websites. If you're stuck, I can upload it to my own website.

Farther....I'm not sure how you have your pix now. I have been taking pix only with my Smartphone, so the method I have devised is the following... 1. On Smartphone, find photo desired, double-click on it. Click on the 'share' icon (bolos) and select 'Facebook News Feed' from the provided choices. Be sure that you POST it to "Only Me" rather than "Public". 2. This will send the photo, which only you can see on FB, to your FB feed. There, if you left click on the photo, to enlarge it, then right click on the enlarged photo and it will generate a list of choices. I select the "copy photo". 3. Come here to EF, find where it is you want to drop your photo, and paste what you copied. scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/90386514_3436477273034213_2455730835198836736_o.jpg?_nc_cat=100&_nc_sid=8024bb&_nc_ohc=N6N2r-WdrpkAX-oQP_w&_nc_ht=scontent-sea1-1.xx&oh=8ae4df38cfe71f390d71f51b2bb62539&oe=5EA4C462 (It's the back garden.) Note: I have better luck posting pix from other places on the innernets than I do my own photos, in that I get pix as a results, rather than addys like this...This one I had to copy from the photo's address bar, as it was not picking up the address when I clicked the 'copy photo' command. Dunno why.

It was. But now it seems there is an issue - apparently my friend was in breach of contract to the rescue centre by rehoming the dog with me. She contacted them and was told she should have given the dog back to the rescue kennels if she couldn’t cope. I understand where they are coming from -they can’t allow dogs to just be passed around - but I am an experienced dog owner with a loving home and of course she thought she was doing it for the best.
They demanded she returns the dog immediately. She has refused because of the lockdown and her husband’s health has deteriorated very badly (it’s not looking very hopeful at all). The rescue centre is in Bournemouth, she’s in Northamptonshire and we’re in Wales. I spoke to them and reassured them she was fine and sent photos but I’m not prepared to travel either. Hopefully they’ll be ok (I’m waiting to hear their decision) but if they want her they’ll have to come here. And keep a distance.

Your dog now! Rescue centres need to chill. In this specific case.

In my experience with shelters, the prospective owners were treated with enormous suspicion. I had to fill out a form that was several pages long and then wait wile they scrutinized every syllable. Honestly! I'm not going to hurt your dog! I do understand that you have to be careful but really!
On the other hand, when I bought Liam from the breeder they just went over the basics. I guess when you're spending 1000$ for a dog they know you're not going to mistreat it...

I looked at rescue but the criteria was so strict I gave up, even though I know we are completely responsible pet owners. A friend of mine who lives in a small sleepy village was refused a rescue kitten because she lives by a road. Who doesn’t live by a road?

There are some very despicable people out there masquerading as good samaritans. Paying big money for a pet can lead to other problems. Scams where unscrupulous breeders work with folks who critter-nap and seek reward money.

A friend of mine who lives in a small sleepy village was refused a rescue kitten because she lives by a road. Who doesn’t live by a road? Heh...I'd bet they judge by how 'busy' the road is. But, here, all the hairy eyeballs would go with any inkling that she might ever let the cat even go outside. Here, you are supposed to keep your cat indoors, safe and sound, at all times. There is no thought that there might be a high risk road right outside the door. Your kitty should never see that side of the door, y'know? I went to the county animal shelter, where their primary concern is that the animal is being placed in an appropriate environment for the animal. They are familiar with their animals and can provide guidance on which of their currently adoptable animals might be best for your home circumstances. When we went, Swimmer picked out Cleo, an active female Abbytabby mix from a foster home environment, she had to meet with the shelter staff. When they were doing that, they set me up with a possible....a recently trapped feral kitten who had shown some 'domesticity' in handling there at the shelter. That was Murray. We now suspect that they scoped us out as the older, semi-retired couple with no other pets and she had selected the best possible match to go with such a fragile adoption like a feral kitten, an 'older sister'. It worked. Having Cleo drew the very skittish and shy Murray out in to the household.

I certainly have never known one - most cat owners here have cat flaps and the cats come and go.

As so they should. Like free-range chickens... well, not exactly like chickens, but they should be able to taste the outdoor air.

Oh, I'm of the same opinion. And, I think if we had tried to continue do deny outside access to Cleo, she would have made our lives miserable. She thrives on stalking the back garden. She is also one of those cats who has never met a door that she wouldn't prefer to be on the other side of. Murray, my 'feral' cat, likes access to the outdoors, but I think he thinks of it as a huge toilet and wants to finish his business so he can get back to bedlumping. He probably could have been confined with only modest complaint.
I tend to think that cat doors are ill-advised. Raccoons. Yes, I know of the electronic collars, but we failed at keeping ordinary collars on them, so I sure as hell am not going to waste a lot of money on 'key-collars' that become curiosities in somebody else's garden, toute suite.
(Note here that I write this under current circumstances where Murray has decided that he likes going outdoors at 3 or 4 am in the morning. So, what does he do? He tramples his human minion. Multiple times, if necessary. This means that his human is now awake, and aware of his full bladder, and must transit the distance to the toilet, which will take him very near the balcony door. I suspect that Cleo likes to sleep through this and awaken me with her trampling a couple hours later, for the same reason. By then, Murray is ready to come back in and follows me back to bed after grabbing a snack.)
