Apparently Hollywood has shifted its focus from Russia or Iraq as the bad guy to North Korea as the bad guy: a new action film is coming out soon about the NK taking over the PEntagon and of course only one guy is left in the Pentagon to save the day. This is not new. See: Team America picked Kim Jung-Il as the evil mastermind back in 2004.

I read that he had his aunt's uncle executed recently. If that is true then I don't really blame his top officials for feeling nervous

I think mass defections were predictable. They knew they wouldn't survive.

I wonder how Kim Thingy sleeps at night though. Does he honestly not feel afraid? Who is protecting him, other than his own Cult of Personality? Once that crumbles, once enough people (either major functionaries within the regime or just ordinary people) realise what a whole load of crap the whole thing is then he is in trouble. At the moment his subjects are supposed to worship both him and his predecessors as a God. What will he do when they see through that ? I think that this man will swing from a noose one day.

He surrounds himself with loyal subjects and people who will protect him. If you are one of his guards, your choice is to protect him or be tortured and put to death along with your family. Most people opt for the former. Stalin kept himself alive for years like that.

Don't forget, he was born into this. He doesn't know any different/better.

Don't forget, he was born into this. He doesn't know any different/better. I believed he had lived in Switzerland for 1 year. I suppose it's correct to say that he had seen the world outside since. But he chose to be the kind of dictator he is now. I feel sorry for the people in North Korea. When I was a kid, we had also a notorious dictator Chiang Kai-shek (and his son became his successor who gradually opened up the possibility of political reforms). However, the 2 president Chiangs in Taiwan weren't as cruel as the Kim dynasty. And we enjoy democracy in Taiwan now. So nothing is impossible. It takes time though.

I think he's guilty as hell.

No, you both misunderstand me. I meant he was born into this position of power. He may have lived in Switzerland and seen how it could be, but few people would give up such a position. Aside from that, he will have been taught with strict discipline. I doubt he will have been allowed friends his parents did not approve of. Part nature perhaps, but definitely also a very big part nurture IMO.

I didn't think he WAS born into a position of power .. he was not the oldest son was he? Though he was, I suppose, raised to believe his father was a God.

Seems logical. You wouldn't want relatives left who could in the future decide to have their revenge. Rules to being an Evil Overlord #67
