So I think the UK will be heading towards compulsory masks/face coverings in public pretty soon - bojo hinted as much last night.
I'm really pleased at this - I've been wearing one on my very few shopping trips since lockdown, but been quite annoyed at the blasé attitude of some people and the stares I've sometimes had (although less so recently).
I know we've discussed the effectiveness of masks elsewhere, but who is wearing them? What sort do you wear? Are they compulsory where you are? Would you like them to be (or not to be)?
Admin suggestion - maybe we should have a section for covid related threads?

They are compulsory in shops and on public transport here. Some people wear them when cycling which I could not do, I'd start hyperventilating. But I think it is good to wear them when shopping or using trams and buses. At the very worst, they won't do any good, but I do think they protect other people.

I don't wear them and won't if it's not obligatory. I'll keep my distance. Honestly I think it's better to keep your distance, clean your groceries and wash your hands regularly.

I wear my masks when I do any shopping. I don't know if I have Covid 19 or not, so I don't like to take chances in closed areas.

Maybe it's not that necessary now, but it's become a habit and you don't want to be the odd one out. These are typically use once and throw away. I really should get some reusable /washable ones. The better masks have a metal plate to shape around your nose. This limits your breathe escaping via the top (and steaming up your glasses if it's cold outside). The downside of wearing a mask in summer is that it can become uncomfortable in hotter weather. I don't wear one in the car, that's just crazy!

Within the bounds of my own home and garden, I do not wear a mask. I have two, an N95 and, just yesterday, Swimmer brought me a standard cloth mask. I have not used either, because I have not engaged any others outside my home since the Ides of March. Friends have brought groceries to me and left them on the front porch. I glove up, bring them in and deal with them before degloving, hand washing/showering, and then returning to SOP.
I keep the masks, and a box of disposable latex gloves, against the possibility that I may have to go to the pharmacy.
I am still puzzled about the dentist being a positive push for reopening for non-essential service. I'm wondering if the new DDS bought the practice just prior to the pandemic outbreak and now she is under a financial burden to get back up and running to have the income coming in to make the 'mortgage'. The curse of my age group is so many of our providers, often our own age, are retiring from the profession and selling their practices. I suspect that is what is happening here.
It still seems to me that a tooth cleaning session with my hygienist is unnecessarily risky absent clear public health guidelines. Those are what I am waiting to hear, from an informed and authoritative source. I have not yet seen that. Despite that, my immediate region has done quite well with the 'shelter in place' guidelines. We gave New York ventilators. Not many, but we had them to give.
As a retiree, I am not under the gun to go back to any workplace situation. For this I am enormously grateful. I feel for those under the gun of economic necessity.

BTW, I do my best to keep a distance despite the mask. Though in supermarkets it is sometimes impossible since the aisles tend to be narrow and then there are boxes in the way. In that case, I try to at least get past other people as quickly as possible and that's what most people do.

What Claudia said. It's compulsory in shops and supermarkets. Elsewhere some people wear it, some don't, but most people abide by social distancing directives.

They tried that here but unfortunately people rebelled. I wished they would wear them. Ding dongs.

This is a rather interesting article about wearing masks in Missouri. Two infected hairstylists were wearing masks and yet none of their 140 customers, also masked, got Covid-19: Anchorage Daily News

Yes...It is a 180 degree turnabout from February. Now, I'm seeing articles which are saying that, short of an effective vaccine, masks, distancing and hand-washing are the ticket and the whole mask thing is a critical, if not crucial, aspect of protecting ourselves. Like this one.

Yes...It is a 180 degree turnabout from February. In April and May, the UK government quoted the WHO who said that the evidence was inconclusive - probably because it takes time to gather the evidence - but media commentators believe it was to safeguard NHS workers when masks were in very short supply.

Yes. Well, I believe there is an entire thread here dedicated to the discussion of the efficacy of masks in which you were repeatedly and glaringly WRONG on this topic. So, you won't mind if I ignore you entirely.

Actually, I think tangent might be glaringly right in thinking that there was no big push for wearing masks so that there wouldn't be a shortage for health care workers. But feel free to ignore me entirely also.
