I didn't watch - frankly did not even realise that he was making - Boris's speech today but I have seen a lot of sardonic comments about it. Apparently we are all supposed to be, erm, alert, but to what purpose most people do not seem entirely clear. Did anyone watch it? What did you think of it?

I have decided, it is my solemn duty to stay alert.

He was clear that he might probably introduce a sort-of 14-day quarantine for people travelling into the UK from abroad. But not from Ireland or France perhaps. And he didn't say when the scheme would start, or how it would be enforced, or how far travellers could travel from the port or airport to their chosen quarantine place, and whether or not they could use public transport to get there, and whether or not they could shop for essentials before beginning their quarantine, and could they quarantine with other people that they'd not travelled with?
So all perfectly clear, and providing everyone stays fully alert, I can't see that any other guidance is necessary anyway.

Go to work, but don't go to work, don't go on the bus, stay home but go out as long as you want. Work and shop alongside strangers but don't see anyone you're related to, unless you're on your own in a park. All clear?
Thankfully Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are devolved and still advising Stay Home (lockdown). What worries me is people heading here because Boris has said you can drive any distance you like. Wales is closed!

To those who are pushing to 'open up' and want 'masks off', I say, "You first. You show us the way. I'll continue sheltering in place, social distancing, masking, and handwashing. Show us your stuff. I'll see you in a few weeks, if you're still alive."

The only masks our supermarkets sell are beauty products for cleansing the skin. But you can buy surgical masks online, with a lead time of up to 12 days, for between 50p and £15 each. There has been much publicity about reducing supplies to the health service and because of that, it is recommended that we make our own.

There are several people in the community where I live who are making them and selling them. I bought two --one tie dyed and one polka dotted.

How to make a mask just using a sock and scissors - no sewing required.

I dunno if that is a serious suggestion - about the socks - but actually it looks good to me

If you have some old socks - maybe lost one of a pair, or one has holes - then why not try? In fact probably best to experiment with the one with holes first to work out the best place to make the 'ear loop' cuts. Then, if you got it just right, you can use it as a pattern on the 'good' sock, and if not, you can adjust the size a bit bigger or smaller compared to the experiment.
