What goes in a rice salad? I have some trouble imagining it.

I instantly associate rice salads with vicar's wives because that's all they used to bring to their 'bring-and-share' meals. (Chester diocese is split into 18 deaneries, each deanery covering an area with about 20 churches. Many years ago, before I moved to Marple, vicars from the Congleton Deanery would meet together for business while their wives would hold a garden party. Rice salad was mandatory.) I can't stand the stuff myself.

I also have no idea of what a rice salad could be. For me, rice is either eaten hot as part of a main meal or cold in rice pudding.

Rice, yellow pepper, chorizo, tuna, frankfurters, tomato, sweetcorn, sometimes chopped cucumber.

It is notable for being a very cheap dish with only a minimal amount of protein.

Is that a good thing? Being almost entirely made of carbs doesn't sound ideal.

Fifty years ago, it was how vicars and their wives survived on their minimal wage.

It's got loads of protein? Sausages, tuna etc? Also not cheap to be frank about it.

Honestly try it .. it works surprisingly well. As long as I don't wreck the rice which alas I did when Steve was visiting

No, it's supposed to be salad with minimal protein - so little you don't realize it's there. Let's not try to subvert it.

If you add half a tin of mixed fruit in syrup, would you have a rice pudding salad?
