This morning I received an email from the local council which looked perfectly legitimate, asking me to click a link to: householdresponse.com/stockport (A) Clicking the link was supposed to enable the council to work out who is registered to vote in elections. This web address appears to be totally genuine. But on clicking the link, instead of sending you to (A), it actually sends you to: lnk.ie/4fixx/e=steve@ogley.com/https://householdresponse.com/stockport (B) (A) is what is written in the text but (B) is the website it sends you to. This is exactly what a scammer would do to garner your personal details without your knowledge. On clicking the link, the scammer would forward your request to the legitimate website and doctor any replies to make further links to lnk.ie. You wouldn't be any the wiser. I tried clicking the link (A) and couldn't see any reason why an envelope via lnk.ie was necessary. Aha! I thought, an obvious scam. So I put out a warning message to my friends on Facebook and emailed Stockport Council to make them aware of the scam. "Oh no," they replied, it's perfectly legitimate, it really is from us. Well thanks, Stockport, for imitating a scammer and giving scammers an easy way to copy you.
