Liam was hit by a car and his leg was broken. Tasha and her boyfriend took him to the country to visit Laurence and this morning he got out without his leash. In his excitement, he ran out in front of a car and was hit. There's no internal damage, but one of his hind legs has a serious fracture and he needs an operation to stabilize it. They're driving him back to Montreal today for the operation which will cost a couple thousand dollars... This really sucks...

They're putting a temporary cast on it now until he can have the operation on Tuesday morning after the long weekend. It's going to cost almost 5000$

He's on pain meds now and Tasha feels terrible, but she's giving him as much love as possible.

Oh the poor thing!! I hope he is okay soon. If you set up a GoFundMe I'll chip in a small amount .. I am sure your parishoners would want to too

That's very sweet. I think Tasha is thinking about doing that. She's taken on the financial responsibility for this...

Awww, poor things! Both Liam for the actual accident and Tasha for the big scare. 5000 dollars though... that's an awful lot.

Yes Tasha feels terrible. And I almost passed out when they called me with the news. Actually, it's closer to 6000$ --I had forgotten to factor in the original vet bill.
Thanks for the share, Jo. The cost is a big blow for Tasha. Don't feel you have to contribute though. I know times are tough for you right now.

"Vets can charge what they like, and prices fluctuate greatly throughout the UK. A dog's broken leg can cost £1,000 to mend; a cat's up to £300. A pet's pacemaker might set an owner back £2,500, removing a cat's cataracts costs about £500 and treating a dog's knee ligaments £1,000 or more."
"How much do treatments for broken bones in a dog cost? It varies, depending on the severity of the break. Generally, the cost of a dog’s broken bone runs from $200 to $1,000 and up."
"Fix broken leg (includes consult, x-ray, surgery, plaster cast, painkillers and meds) on a Bank Holiday whilst on vacation. £3000"

Yep --this is a pretty complicated surgery and not all vets can perform it. Luckily, the vet we have is one of the few who can. I guess you pay for the best...

It is still a rip off though I dunno how many hours it will take him but he must be on a hell of an hourly wage.

Yep. We're so spoiled here that human doctors don't cost anything. But then we need an operation for our pets and the sky is the limit. That being said, Liam's break is quite serious and complicated.

Are you at least getting a titanium bone replacement for the price?

So Liam is at the hospital now waiting for his surgery. The doctor says it's pretty straightforward --he's putting a couple of pins in and then splinting it. He probably won't need a cast, and he'll be like new in about 4 weeks. Tasha's GoFundMe was a big success! My cousin gave her over 1000$ and, with that and the donations, she met her goal! Thanks to those who contributed. We'll probably be picking him up later today, and I'll see if I can post a pic.

The doctor says it's pretty straightforward -- Did he say this with a straight face while still charging $6000?

Yeah! Still waiting though.
This operation will cost 3800$ but the vet visit before in Rimouski cost another 1000$ Tasha reduced the GoFundMe amount to 5000$ because we thought today's operation was going to be even more expensive and it wasn't.

Sorry to hear this happened, but I'm glad the GoFundMe helped. There is an animal clinic in Bremen which is known for being outrageously expensive. We are lucky with our vet, though I doubt he could do surgery on such a complicated fracture. Hoping Liam will make a quick and full recovery. This whole experience must have been scary.

Deborah's snake had to have surgery once, I think to remove unfertilised eggs, and she needed oxygen overnight but it was not that expensive, less than we expected.
