Hmm, shame. Some fish and chip shops do deliveries. I hope he gets some.

We have a new, good fish & chip shop here. Shall I see if they deliver to Cumbria?

If you find one that will deliver decent Brit fish'n'chups to PDX in North America, clue me in.
Everything offered here is a pale and pathetic attempt to create a fish'n'chups of British style. It is a full faux fail.

Is that because the local population would not accept the real thing? Indian food is likewise westernised.

Oh...The local population would accept the real thing. They'd be spoiled by the real thing.

Our local chippies (Dutch style though) aren't very good, but we'll have to make do with them. Some restaurants have very good chips, but they are not the sort to do takeout of only chips. That would come with 30 euro main courses if they even do takeout. Most normal restaurants in the Netherlands do not.

For years, the Magpie Cafe in Whitby had a reputation for being the best fish 'n' chip shop in Britain but I think it might now only come in the top ten. Just a few yards away, the Fisherman's Wife is also a strong contender for the title.

I had fish n chips in a restaurant this afternoon but it was a very small portion. And it was served with salad so really, that doesn't count (anything with salad is diet food).

Pub or restaurant fish n chips, although they can be very good, are just not the same as chippie fish n chips

Definitely. Much larger portions in a fish n chip shop as well as battered fish and no tartar sauce

And here I thought it was the oil-soaked newsprint that made the difference...
I was always impressed with the portion size; the deep fried fish being two to three times the volume of a typical fish portion in the US.
