UTC is the politically correct name for GMT. From 1st January, 2323 we'll be able to count using the already-defined Stardate system. It is currently Stardate -310102.9, which I think would confuse some, counting towards zero.

I would also totally support a universal time. There would be initial grumbles and difficulties for some, like when changing currencies, but people adjust pretty well. And please, if it would get us rid of DST!

If anyone complained it was unfair to be based on a particular area's daylight times we could just make the day 25 hours long so it moved round. That wouldn't be confusing, would it? ...even better idea, make it based on the Earth's full rotation, not relative to the sun. That way it'd take a year to move round once. We can get rid of this AM/PM nonsense while we're at it.

And have decimal time. Ten seconds in a minute, 10 minutes in an hour, 10 hours in a day, 10 days in a week, 10 weeks in a year. That would simplify things. That would mean I was 251 years old.

I think that days and years would have to stay more fixed, because of the way in which they are measured. I don't trust them to modify the planet's orbit!

Decimal time just doesn't make as much sense, physically. The Earth is roughly 24,000 miles around and rotates at roughly 1,000 miles an hour, hence our 24 hour days. Sure, it's arbitrary. You'd have to redefine all of your time units, and the second is already part of the mks system (which is metric, btw).

Decimal time would work if we didn't have 365 days in a year.

Have pity on the poor Antipodians - they already have to have Christmas in the summer - how would they cope with having their breakfasts in the evening?

I am very pleased to see that this forum accepts pics as avatars and does not insist on me having to change them to the proper size It was the first time I've been on Photobucket in years... Haven't used it at all since the old forum. Those pictures are so old now.
