It's not that I condone violence but I also do not like bullying jokes about people's physical appearance either. If someone had said something cruel about Col on live TV I might have itched to slap them (though likely would not have)

I completely agree, famous people seems to think it's acceptable to make horrid jokes about others but to my mind verbal abuse is just as bad as physical abuse.

Did Rock know that she suffered with a condition that required that she cut her hair in that fashion? Or, did he think she adopted it as a 'fashion statement'? After all the hoopla about the MCU Black Panther franchise, I'd have thought Rock might have done better suggesting that she was prepping for Black Panther III, rather than a 1973 film about a white woman in the military. Would that have made any difference? Legally, I believe that no words justify physical violence; there was no legal justification for what Smith did to Rock. None.
It is a tempest in a teapot. I cannot believe that so many people expend so much time and energy fretting over the peccadillos of celebrities. What a fucking waste while the world is burning.

She'd talked a lot about having alopecia

I've never heard her say a thing about it. But, then, I live without watching every word that somebody making obscene amounts of money doing make-believe. I'll bet Rock watches all of that; it's fodder for his topical humor. Had I seen her, I would not have known the deal. I guess Jada just assumes that she is so fucking awesome that everybody keeps tabs on her, huh?

Even had she not had alopecia, he had no right to say what he said.

Even had she not had alopecia, he had no right to say what he said. Right? What right is that? Was it slander? I think not. He is a comedian. Of the same stock in trade as the likes of Don Rickles. She is a celebrity at a celebrity event. Have you ever seen a 'roast'?

I dunno who Don Rickles is. I just don't like cruel humour At the very least he should have run the joke by her first.

Aw, ferchrisakes....That flies in the face of freethought entirely. Jada Pinkett needs to grow another, tougher, layer of skin.
Look...Watch the whole exchange, starting from when Rock makes the comment. Hope that what you are watching shows Smith's initial reaction. He laughed. It was only after he realized Pinkett's displeasure that he jumped up and rushed in to an illegal act of assault and battery. That's bullshit.
Those who enter the rarified air of celebrity life need to get the fuck over themselves. They will, by virtue of their status, be subjected to ridicule and ribbing. If they respond with violence, then they should be held legally accountable. Again, no language justifies physical violence.
Once learning that Pinkett, and by extension, Smith, are active Scientologists, I ceased to give even the tiniest shit what they think. I now think that Rock should file charges and Pinkett should get the fuck over herself.
And...a bit of advice. Whatever you do, do NOT attend any live humorist's show. Stand up, particularly. You will be offended and you may be selected to become the butt of a joke or jokes. It is what often happens in such settings. The humorless are ejected, like they tried to do with Will Smith.

Yes well, I don't care for their Scientologist views either and hold no candle for either of them. It wasn't about who they are though.

Yes well, I don't care for their Scientologist views either and hold no candle for either of them. It wasn't about who they are though. It wasn't? Then please make it clear what it was about. You seem to have information not provided me. To be clear, are you suggesting that the next time anybody says anything snarky about my male pattern baldness, I, or my friends, will have every right to physically attack them?

I have made it clear what it was about. It might have been any pair of celebrities - it does not much matter to me that it was the Smiths.
Do people regularly make fun of your male pattern baldness? How rude. And no, violence is never the answer, but I'd certainly say something in return.

Regularly? No. But, if I shaved my head entirely bald, I'm betting I'd get all sorts of commentary, to my face. I did when I shaved my beard off, last time.
I think your hypersensitivity is misplaced. It sounds to me as if you should cease watching such fare, entirely. Then, you would not be exposed to such dreadful, traumatic scenes. No more comedians, for you, young lady. That goes for all comedians serving as masters of ceremony, as well. Or, maybe, especially. Strike them entirely from your viewing list.

Oh I didn't watch it - I certainly have never bothered. I just read about it then saw a clip. Watch the Oscars? Pfft.

Same here. I have not watch oscars in a decade as actors are not relevant to my life. I just saw it in a clip somewhere while working. Slapping punching is never ok. If he made a joke and did not know then apologize and move on. If he meant it it could have been addressed not on stage. Since I was not there who knows what really is as Hollywood types stretch truths out.

YES! Classic. This is pretty tiny in this format. Will jiggering the 'font size' calibration upsize it, or will it require intervention? Meh...
