I stumbled across this on YouTube. For me, it has a high amusement factor and topical content. Of course, what I've been watching is not particularly topical, since it's archived.
I get the gist of it being that Ian Haislip and Paul Merton are the 'team captains' and the steady content on every show, riffing throughout with their witticisms and encouraging the 'guests' to do the same. The MC and the 'guests' (one per 'side') rotate from episode to episode. The 'guests' come from the ranks of B or C level 'celebrities', often comedians, journalists, and political types. Rees-Mogg was a guest for one episode. I'm not quite sure gets one to the role of MC and show host, but I've seen some more recent hosts who were guests on earlier shows. I'm guessing that all have 'careers' other than HIGNFY. Following Victoria Coren, a regular host, I find that she is doing a rather interesting and fun series called Balderdash and Piffle dealing with word histories and the selection board of the OED.

Oh I love this - it's the highlight of my Friday nights . It has been going since I was about 14. It used to be hosted by a man called Angus Deyton and he was the only host but unfortunately he got caught up in a cocaine and prostitute scandal and was fired (a bit hypocritically, to be honest, because I suspect that a very large percentage of BBC people have taken cocaine in their lives). Yeah, most of the guests and hosts are very well known on the UK comedy circuit. I can recommend a lot of other shows that we enjoy if you're able to get them.

Is there a "news faux game show" circuit on British TV?

If you add in "Mock The Week", maybe yes.
Hosted by the inimitable Dara O'Briain and with Hugh Dennis, another veteran of British comedy as by now the only other constant team captain - though there are are a few other regulars.

I'm just noticing familiar faces on other comedy panel shows....Mitchell, Ayoade, Jo Brand, Frye. It's like a big entertainment circuit.

I'll ask Col to compile you a list of things to look out for ... I dunno how much will be available to you though but there's some great stuff out there along the HIGNFY line.

When we were on holiday in Cyprus, I bought a subscription to a VPN that gave me access to British TV, thereby allowing me to continue watching my favourite programmes. Presumably you could do that for a short while in the States, although I think you would also need a TV licence for BBC programmes and an app that provided catchup TV for the other channels.

oooh Richard Ayoade this week Yep....Season 63, episode 3. I had it by Saturday morn. I have difficulty believing it has been on 60+ years, so I'm assuming they do multiple 'seasons' per year. From the packaging on YouTube, it seems they do ten episodes per 'season', which if they did two 'seasons' per year, they'd only cover under half of the year's 52 weeks. Is that accurate, or have I got something else wrong in my calculations? I will say this....Baroness Warsi certainly shatters my prejudices with regards Tories. What gives with her? Why is she seemingly so 'likeable'? And, I did not realize that Boris had a 'wild oats' problem. Well, that's those Johnsons for you. ETA: I found the HIGNFY wiki page, complete with charts of every episodes' host, guests, and outcome. For posterity, I guess. It started back in 1990, with ten episodes per year, which went on for several years, I guess until it was kicked upstairs to BBC-1 and started taking on two seasons of ten episodes a year. How ever did one make it through a year with only ten episodes, back in the day? What were they alternating it with?

Yeah I was about fifteen when it started. I didn't remember how many episodes a year there were though.
Warsi is okay - for a Tory - but she is, when all's said and done, still a Tory. She is complicit in many of the awful things the government has done.
