There are some things that are know or at least 99% certain, and some things that are hearsay or likely but we will probably never know the true story. However, The Crown treats them as fact and tells us they can do that because it's a drama and therefore not a intended to be an accurate description of anything. I find that a scurrilous position to take. 99% of the general public are going to take the important details in The Crown as accurate in all respects, and thus hearsay becomes fact in all of our minds. The latest rumour is that Prince Phillip had an affair, but there is no evidence of this. Town & Country says that: Nevertheless, the general public will firmly believe they did. Queen Elizabeth would never sue anyone and I very much doubt King Charles will do so.

Of course he had an affair ... that one has been widely known for decades and is not just gossip.

Yeah? So what evidence is there of this dalliance? And...Why do you care?

I don't care - I just think it's naive to assume he was faithful. He spent decades with some woman called Penny ... it was an open secret. But I don't care enough to argue about it, funnily enough

I'm not sure of the boundary between private life and a matter of state. Subject of gossip, yes but I agree with WG, why should we care what he got up to in private?

I'm asking how you know it is not 'just gossip'. You use phrases like 'open secret' and 'naive to assume he was faithful', but I have yet to see any evidence at all. Merely lurid and salacious natterings...y'know, things republicans would make up just to smear aristocrats.
Well...y'know....Those Greeks. You gotta keep watch on them all the time, or they'll go off reservation and hit on anything in a skirt....

It's simply been fodder for the papers - even the respectable ones - for decades. Might not be true of course and like I said, I don't really care but - I would not be all that pleased if Col was spending so much time with another woman

Who would be pleased about a spouse cheating really?

He even kept it at work for nearly a year before she found out about it. It finally came home and did the "roll of shame" into the drive. From then on, my gardener friend has always referenced the motorcycle as, "that BRAZEN hussy"...and snickered. I think they just celebrated their 27th anniversary.
