Got to work this morning and found Facebook message from my dog's breeder asking if I would like to co-own a female puppy from her newest litter. Squee and gulp! This is a great opportunity to own a dog of fabulous bloodlines, hand-picked by the breeder herself as a future breeding dog. And I know I wanted another pup this summer but figured I couldn't afford it - this is a chance to get a pup at half price (and of of a pedigree I am dribbling about to boot), but it turns 7 weeks in two days, so this would mean picking it up NEXT WEEK! I am so distracted about this horrible, wonderful decision I am not getting any work done.

What does it mean to co-own? (I only ever had mutts...)

(am anxious to know the answer as well, and also puzzled!)

If a breeder wants to keep a promising pup for themselves (for future breeding purposes) but already have enough dogs in their own home and don't want to raise another just then, they will find a family that will basically be a foster home to co-own it and treat the pup otherwise like their own. If the dog as an adult turns out to be an asset to the breed gene pool as planned then the breeder will breed usually one litter from it and after that the dog belongs 100% to the family it lives with. It means getting a pup that the breeder has essentially chosen for herself, and at half the price. I essentially told her I am interested, so looks like I'll be visiting her on Friday to meet my new ward I understand dog breeding is viewed very differently in many places, but here it is very dutiful and solemn; almost all dogs are registered pedigree dogs born to parents that are show or trial champions. Pups are usually bred by and bought from from Kennel Club member breeders whose goal is to make dogs that better the breed, not make money, and the pups are born in the breeder's home. Most breeders are very selective who the sell their babies to, and keep the prices very high, partly to ward off impulse buyers and other troublesome cases. You sometimes see mutts, but even they are often registered as only registered dogs can participate in activities such as agility or obedience trials.

Wow, that is controlled! My dog was the product of a Golden Retriever mom and an unknown father (probably on the Border Collie side, given my dog's appearance). The puppies were shipped off to the local SPCA which is where I got her.
But your new one sounds like a very good thing! Congrats!

Thanks Yes, the Kennel Club has a LOT of control, but I am not complaining, as it means we have a very low rate of homeless or otherwise unwanted dogs. There are actually groups that import shelter dogs from abroad for those who want one of those.

Well, it's less a case of the population in general being responsible and more to do with the central control of the kennel club and the laws on the subject. But as the end result is almost the same, so we'll take it!

Mine was from a private family who had two dogs. The woman wanted to breed them and the man didn't... then he went away on a business trip. I believe that someone my mum works with has one of Honey's sisters.

Is it the same breed as Huxley then? Yes, also a border terrier. So far only known as "Purple"...

She's going to give Huxley a run for his money in cuteness! He'll be jealous.

Any idea what "Purple" will become when older? Yes, several ideas, one strong one. I have not yet told the kids. The plan is to take Huxley to a dog show on Saturday and pick it up on the way back. And then surprise the kids with "look what we won!"

Ah, well here is the breeder's puppy page, it has a full picture of the father and headshot of both parents. And here is Huxley at about age 1, around knee-high.
