I quite liked the first few episodes. We're not skipping over the fact that Patrick Stewart is old. During a couple of the scenes I even got worried that he'd get a heartattack from all the exercise. No, Jean-Luc is old and he's treated as such. The infallible captain has apparently made a huge mistake and had withdrawn. Due to getting involved in weird circumstances, we're now going to see if it really was a mistake or not (I'm betting not. His role is that of infallible upright guy fighting for life, human or non-human alike after all)
Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

I have a DVD, which was a Christmas present last year and have watched the first episode twice now.

I watched the first few episodes of the first season. It did not hold my interest.
I think I may have been spoiled by 'The Expanse', which was far better in practically all aspects.

What made you lose interest? (though to be fair, I haven't watched beyond the first 4 or 5 episodes either. But then: I hardly get any TV time)

I found the pacing to be slow, the characters to be tired, and the plots to be...same as it ever was.
I think that the biggest problem is that viewing it in tandem with watching most of six seasons of The Expanse, which was so gripping I was left desiring more after every episode. The comparison made Picard look flat and uninteresting. The Expanse makes it clear that the 'living in space' issue is much, much greater than in any of the Trek, or Wars, issues and the latter have resorted to entirely unrealistic assumptions to make filming a whole lot easier....like dealing with gravity.
It's kinda like being unwilling to go back to the humdrum stuff after you've had a taste of the top-of-the-line premium stuff.

The Expanse sounds very interesting. Unfortunately for me, I don't have access to it since my only possibility is Netflix and they don't have it.

Yeah, it started on SciFi and then Amazon picked it up. It is six seasons with 10 episodes per season, except the last. I think Amazon now owns the rights. My local pirate got me a thumbdrive copy.

Oh, I might be able to watch it on Prime then. I'll have a look. I'm watching The Nevers by Joss Whedon. It's very Whedon-esque. It's all very interesting and engaging, but at the same time you have non clue what's going on. Every new episode I'm spending at least a couple of minutes wondering if I skipped an episode or something. Still, I keep discovering more of what's going on (and then it turns out to be wholly different).

I saw the first episode but wasn’t paying for another streaming service. I have Amazon and Netflix and am no adding more.
I did like it.

They bought the show and have the rights to it. I loved it all and wished they would create a continuing story about the rings and beyond.

Ah! I don't have Amazon Prime. Or a TV. I can buy it on Google play --I might try an episode. Anything liked by both Goat and KE is worth a look! Vudu is US only.

Sure...Sample it. But just remember that if it entices you, there are some 56 total episodes. (I think...five seasons of ten, with last season being only six episodes.) So it's either pace yourself, or take the plunge. Of course, if you decide it is over-hyped, then you're not out much.
The first few episodes are world-building and, as I remember it, were focused on a noir mystery theme. In the Jovian system and the asteroid belt. Thomas Jane as Detective Josephus Miller is a wondrous characterization. It will be your introduction to the Beltaloda world, and it has its own patois, which I acclimated to fairly quickly. You will meet the protagonists and see them gain possession of their frigate and get a rudimentary understanding of the political tensions of the solar system. IIRC, you should have a good immersion by episode five or six. If you get that far, I suspect you will finish the entire series. Season changes are intriguing and captivating, as well. There will be new characters who come and go, but the core will be there by end of season one.

I'm not usually into the political kind of show, but I'm willing to give it a look. I have a hard time getting into new shows because of my prosopagnosia. It usually takes me a few episodes to figure out who's who. But if I use the subtitles, they often add the person's name and that makes it a bit easier.

I'm not usually into the political kind of show, but I'm willing to give it a look. So, you are neither a Star Wars fan, nor a Star Trek fan, then? Because they were/are both 'political' shows. The basic solar system political situation in The Expanse is Earth (with Moon), Mars, and the Astroid Belt. They are distinct populations, all expanded out from earth in the prior two hundred years. Earth and Mars struggle for control and, Mars, having been a colony of Earth, revolted. It did not win victory, but stalemate. Instead, it negotiated independence when a Martian scientist achieves a propulsion breakthrough and they bargain sharing for their independence. Mars diverts masses of investment from planetary reclamation to weaponry in expectation of protecting itself from Earth and becomes the rising martial power. At the opening of the series narrative, Earth and Mars are struggling to control the resources of the Asteroid Belt and the Outer Planets (mostly moons). Those resources are extracted and processed by Belters, many of whom have never experienced real gravity. They live and work in the Expanse. A good portion were born in 'space'...low gravity environments. They have their own culture and a huge reservoir of resentment towards the Inners, the residents of the Inner Planets (Earth and Mars) as ingrate slave-masters ('wellwala'), which they express in their inimitable creole, Lang Belta. An ice freighter, inbound from the outer planets, receives a distress call...

I like Star Trek but I'm definitely not fan of Star Wars. I realized after you wrote that summary of the plot of the Expanse, that I've actually read the books it's based on Ha! Indeed. James S. A. Corey. It starts with Leviathan Wakes and stretches eight subsequent novels. The Expanse video series is based upon the first six. The scriptwriters for the video series,Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, are James S.A. Corey. It was their pen name when they wrote it. So, although artistic changes were made for the sake of the video production, I'm told it holds fairly true to the print novel series. Did you read the entire nine volume series? Does the frigate 'Rocinante' mean anything to you? There is still a tease about whether the final three novels in the series will ever be produced. Reputedly, it opens thirty years after the final events in the first six novels. A literary hiatus.

Star Trek Enterprise has adult content that is tame in Series 1 but increases to disturbing in Series 3. For example, in Series 3 we see two or three gratuitous murders in one episode and in another episode we see an eminent scientists tortured to death (we actually see him die). There are many more examples of disturbing content. For that reason, I will not watch Star Enterprise again.

Wait, what? The new shows have all forgotten what Star Trek was all about. It's all action and male-female tension inbetween. Ugh.
I wish they'd serialize some of the books by what's her name. Riders of Pern etc. She wrote some very good fantasy/sci fi. Sci fi with dragons or fairies, who doesn't like that?
