To kind of hope that Trump will simply drop dead before the next election? Oh, I don't mean assassination or anything but hey, he can't be all that healthy and he's not all that young and ... the world would really, really benefit without him being in it. I have a horrible feeling that he might be re-elected, even if he is in prison.
Death is not something that I generally wish on anyone. But I am scared of what this lunatic might do if he gets into power again.

I don't want to be ageist, but I can't believe it's going to be a contest between these two *very old* men again. Whether people like them or not here's a really good chance that either one of them could pop off during their presidency, and having parents in their eighties I know how people's energy levels (and faculties, often) are greatly diminished by that age.
And Trump's faculties were questionable in the first place. This situation is crazy.

The contenders ages don't really matter. It is who they can assemble around themselves. Trump is an egotistical coprocephalic and tends to attract the same kind of vermin into his circle of toadies and ass-kissers. Biden is an old-line wheeler-dealer compromise kind of politician who, in an attempt to placate all the portions of his fractious party, has raised up the better functionaries to more responsible positions within the power pyramid. Also, he presently has a relatively young stand-in in the vice presidential role who can step in should his health fail and make him unable to continue to lead. I dislike 'Dark Brandon' for aspects other than his age, but all in all, his administration has been a good one.
I'm fairly comfortable with the repeat of a Trump-Biden contest. Trump lost both of the popular votes in 2016 and 2020. Plus, his meddling assured that the Senate is now majority Democratic and the Republicans have a very narrow margin of majority in the House. Ever since the 'red wave' that didn't happen in 2022, the news for Trump and his co-conspirators has just gotten worse and worse. Trump may be able to garner the Republican nomination, but he will NOT be able to win the general election. From what the polls seem to show, Republicans are starting to distance themselves from Trump and his campaign, and, more telling, the large number of non-aligned voters are bleeding out of their support for Republicans, thanks to Trump.
The questions being posed to Republicans of late is, "How many indictments does it take to clinch the Republican nomination for president?" 'All Republicans Are Criminals' is the overarching message.
Personally, I'm hoping Trump pushes it too far and one of the judges throws his fat arse in prison for the duration.

The US system for choosing judges is not permitted in the EU. A country with your system of appointing top judges would not be allowed to join. The current Polish government is trying to change their system so that the government appoints Supreme Court judges and as a consequence the EU has threatened to throw them out of the Union.

The current Polish government is trying to change their system so that the government appoints Supreme Court judges and as a consequence the EU has threatened to throw them out of the Union. So...Each EU nation has their own supreme court with justices, or is there an EU-wide judiciary? How is it that judges/justices come to their official office? Note that throughout the US, judges are 'appointed' or 'elected' to office. Usually, there is a minimum set of qualifications required of the candidate for such a position, but that does not mean that all candidates meet all requirements. Bar associations and legal advisory groups usually play a huge role in who advances to the higher levels of the judiciary.

The requirement is that a country's top level court, whether it is called a Supreme Court or something else, must be independent of the Government. Britain and Poland both have Supreme Courts and no doubt other EU countries too.
There is also a European Court of Human Rights which serves in place of a top-level EU Supreme Court. Although it is closely associated with the EU, it is independent of it. A country does not have to belong to the EU to belong to the European Court.
As I understand it, the American Constitution is an extension of the Bill of Rights and the US Supreme Court is the guardian of that Constitution. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a modern version and extension of the American Bill of Rights - Eleanor Eisenhower was instrumental in creating it - and the European Court of Human Rights is the (European) guardian of that Declaration of Human Rights.
Great Britain => British Supreme Court => European Court of Human Rights => Universal Declaration of Human Rights Oregon State => Oregon Supreme Court => US Supreme Court => US Constitution
There is, however, a distinct difference in that adherence to the European Court is optional - countries can opt in or out of it independently of the EU. Acceptance of individual judgements is also optional. If the British Government doesn't like a judgement, it can ignore it, although the general public would kick up a stink if they did.
I'm hoping EF members will correct any mistakes I've made.

Sure. The one mistake I see is that you didn't answer my question. To whit: How do those who serve as justices on all these courts get their positions? Are they born to them?
A second issue which raises itself is if these courts are 'independent', who is it that enforces judgements? It's all fine and good for a court to make a judgement, but if there is no enforcement of that judgement, then the decision is moot. This was demonstrated in the US with the Cherokee Nation winning its Supreme Court case to hold its ancestral lands against the demands of Anglo settlers. Andrew Jackson just thumbed his nose at the courts decision, taunted them to enforce it, and then had the Cherokee Nation expelled and exiled to Oklahoma and seized all the Nation's lands in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Travesties of justice abound. Seemingly everywhere.

How is it that judges/justices come to their official office? Justices are appointed by an independent panel in the UK but I don't know how they are appointed in the EU nor is it important provided there is no government influence. The EU doesn't care. There are 27 countries in the EU and no doubt 27 different ways the top-level justice system is formed. Nevertheless, before a country may join the EU, it must demonstrate that its justice system is independent. A second issue which raises itself is if these courts are 'independent', who is it that enforces judgements? It's all fine and good for a court to make a judgement, but if there is no enforcement of that judgement, then the decision is moot. The EU does not interfere and there is no mechanism for the EU to enforce a country's judgement decisions any more than Britain can enforce France's judgements. And since there is no EU Supreme Court, the EU itself has no mechanism for enforcing justice decisions. As far as justice is concerned, each country is truly independent. If the European Court of Human Rights were to make a judgement that France, say, were to ignore, the EU Parliament might grumble but they couldn't do anything about it. Observance is mixed. Some countries are notorious for ignoring the European Court's judgements whilst others always obey them. This might, I suppose, have an effect in influencing the EU Parliament on other matters.

The English Bill of Rights came earlier - and the Magna Carta much earlier.

I always understood that justices were appointed at the whim of the crown, and just assumed that with devolution of the crown's powers that this had been delegated to some government panel. But, no...Instead, we've got some kind of 'independent panel' with some very influential powers. So, if the 'independent' panel selects them, does it pay them, too? Or, is there some kind of non-governmental slush fund for these characters?

Yes, the US 'Bill of Rights' is the first ten amendments to the US Constitution, as it was proffered by the authors in 1787. The Supreme Court is not so much the 'guardian' of the Constitution as the designated 'interpreter' of the language and intent of the Constitution, as it applies to the laws drawn up by Congress and implemented by the Administration.

This question, of who nominates, appoints, administers, and pays judges and justices in the UK remains unanswered. I'm utterly intrigued at your claims of 'non-political judicial appointments' and want to know more. Here...I found this: www.supremecourt.uk/about/appointments-of-justices.htmlSo, is the Lord Chancellor 'non-political' or 'non-governmental'? Because they seem to have an inordinate level of influence in these proceedings. I also note that during the process, 'senior politicians and judges' are consulted by the Lord Chancellor...twice. For a 'non-political process', that sure does involve a lot of political input. I also note that this is about how UK Supreme Court justices are selected. It says nothing about how lesser judicial types, like local and regional judges, are selected. That would be interesting, too.

I did hear a tidbit yesterday. Something about southern states having more GDP than the Northern states. I’m not surprised really as they started loosing their edge years ago in that department of economic prosperity or whatever it’s called because of their craziness.

I’m not surprised really as they started loosing their edge years ago in that department of economic prosperity or whatever it’s called because of their craziness. Well, that's disheartening. A clueless and uncaring voter is the fucking worst. We don't need more ignoramuses casting votes...look what it got us in 2016 (and you were complicit in that shitshow). The tidbits you hear and register are dubious, to say the least. Most Southern states are net recipients of federal assistance because their economies are so much worse off than those outside of the South. Two of those states, Florida and Texas, are led by the most backward and retarded Republican shitheads in the country. Texas' own attorney general was recently impeached and removed from office (by his own party members in the state legislature) and awaits trial on corruption charges. Here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS1m8Zh8Id0 This shows the comparative GDP of the top twenty US states. As of 2021, there are six southern states in the ranks of the top twenty. That sounds as though it is skewed in the opposite direction as your asinine assertion. It seems obvious to me that you believe bullshit that you like hearing, rather than whether it is accurate or not. And...'because of their craziness'? Please explicate. Are you referencing the southern states, or the non-southern states? What craziness attributed to whom?

Do you feel better now? Anyway moving on.
I would say we are not worse off. Our economy here is very good. It’s been awesome for years because all the companies blue states have scared off people so they come here due to those states over political, whacko news environments and other issues. Incomes also went way up here. I’ve increase payroll as well as most of my friends who own businesses too. That is why my home was sold to a person from Chicago and 1000 of their employees and company moved here not to mention a bunch of other states a have done that such as California, Washington, and New York. A lot of my newest clients have left and have mention how skewed it is so they moved here. You might want to look beyond your skewed news that you have attained because mine come from the actual business world away from skewed news in the real world.
FYI. My realtor friends have had a great bonanza. Most of their clients are moving from heavy blue state because they can not operate in those states anymore. My neighbor next door just moved here from New York and their tech business as well. Two doors down came from Los Angeles. She moved here to get away from the suffocating policies and moved her art business here.
I live in the real world away from skewed news and see it with more people I can count in my every day life here. I also get a lot of tourists from those states that are telling me they are looking to move here. I just love talking with them and have developed many new friendships from them.
Sorry to burst you bubble but it is alive and well here and we are benefiting from people and their business moving here from blue states. It’s wonderful because I’m able to expand my business further and am networking with these noobs.

My peeps have not transferred anyone back to California yet. Had one goto New Jersey 6 months ago but they moved on to Florida after that.

And you live in the shithole where it is how hot right now?
Nitwits have been fleeing the colder temperature for ages, that's nothing new. 'Snowbirds' is not a new concept.
Shithead capitalists pulling up stakes and moving to the backwoods of the South is also not new, as the cloth industries readily attest. Fueled most likely by graft and greed, because they have fewer constraints upon their businesses and are freer to bilk both their customers and their employees with minimal interference from the state, waves of industries have fled the northern states because they claim the cost of labor has risen too much. They will, in turn, flee your area after the labor costs there rise too much (which you already note is in process) and to a different location and shit on you and yours in turn. Tax avoidance is like a major hobby for Southern capitalists, so state regulation is abyssmal. Just note the fuckhead governor in Texas doing away with safety measures to protect construction workers in the recurrent and ever more common heat waves. And there you are...right in the midst of it. You're a pig in slop. It's all fine until it turns sour; capital flees to where it can harvest the most from its hosts. You and yours are merely predatory parasites always on the lookout for a new host.
Still, as it stands, southern states are still net recipients of federal tax revenues, while most non-southern states are not. Your assertion is bullshit and your 'evidence' naught but anecdotal evidence viewed through your exceedingly constricted aperture.

I’m not buying what your selling and I really did not read beyond “your in insurance!” Statement as it’s to soap boxy, biased, restrictive, controlling to your views and only your way for me to even care. Sorry. It’s time to get back on topic now.
I’d prefer Trump and Biden to fade off along with Kamala Harris and her circular speeches to nowhere. To much news keeps people in fear one side or the other.
