I just read that Ed Miliband is apparently among the top 20 most influential Jewish people in the world (Miliband is leader of the Labour party, tipped as next PM). The thing is - I didn't even know that he was Jewish, you know? Religion is really such a non-issue in British politics. And yet in the US it seems to often be a vote winner ... or loser. Has there ever been a Jewish candidate for Presidency?

Hmm article also says htat he stated that he does not believe in God. So he's an ethnically Jewish atheist. That would go down well with the GOP.

Whilst Cameron is a nominal Christian.

I think being Christian or not doesn't have any bearing on my views of David Cameron.

Haven't come across GOP before. Now I'm "with it".

Maybe, but it almost definitely irritated some others.

Differences? Americans will happily consider pancakes or muffins to be breakfast rather than dessert, but then make a cake out of cheese.

Have you had a good NY cheesecake, Miisa? It is most definitely a dessert!

It can be, but who thought of that? And pancakes are also dessert!

Mmmm cheesecake. The French and Italians probably thought of it first.

And they think biscuits are savoury That may well depend on the biscuits... the ones I get certainly are not, though!

Where do you get American biscuits?

cheesecake is certainly a sweet item, not savoury.
I can only re-quote Bill Bryson, who described English tea-time biscuits as being 'like something you would give a parrot to strengthen its beak'. On the subject of round, flat, sweet baked good the Americans have got us licked.

I meant biscuits in general, not specifically American ones!

Isn't an American biscuit more like an English scone?
Biscuit is one of the few confusing words I do use, in the British sense of any small, baked, sweet thing like that. I reserve "cookie" for the chocolate chop kind. Words I avoid altogether are pants and chips.

Maybe, but it almost definitely irritated some others. Heh. A friend of mine had a part-time job at a pizza place, and the manager there was a muslim immigrant from the middle east. He told her that he voted for Bush because he didn't want a jewish VP. And look what happened! That election was so close you have to wonder whether the nationwide anti-Semitic muslim vote was enough to make the difference between whether Bush or Gore won, and therefore, whether there was an invasion of Iraq.
