Alla you Europeans, get offa my lawn!
I officially turn 60 today. I think that means I'm officially "Over The Hill". If that's the case, I assume that everything from here on out is downhill and I can coast. Right?
Anyway...I've now the right to demand that youngsters exit my grass containment area at the earliest possible moment. I hear. The chiclets don't pay me much mind, any more, so I'm dubious as to the efficacy of my crotchetiness.
Does this make me a 'coot' yet? I know I've been a geezer for much of my life, but I think this might put me over the top for an 'old geezer' appellation. You tell me.

Does this constitute what people call a birthday?
Happy seniority! Free bus pass if you were in London!
"Old geezer" is a state of mind. "Over the hill" is probably a little while yet.

And have a happy birthday with some good cake.

O yeah...I'd forgotten about the senior discount stuff kicking in now. Wooooo-eee. I can hardly wait. Well, I don't have to. Any more. How about 'codger'? Does that apply?

I was reminding my mum a couple of times in Bratislava that she could get a discount on stuff and she wasn't very happy about that. Apparently it was reminding her of her age.

Blame everyone else aging without dying. Retirement age will gradually increase so that I never make it.

I'm always happy to get whatever seniors discounts I can. But at 62 I'm not eligible for as many as I'll get in 3 years!

I'm always happy to get whatever seniors discounts I can. But at 62 I'm not eligible for as many as I'll get in 3 years! Yeah...It's pretty much the same here. Beginning at 'around 60' a fair number of private business outlets will offer 'senior discounts'. This has nothing to do with the real 'retirement age', which, these days, is generally considered to be 65. That's when most Americans qualify for Medicare (and can get off their employers' benefit rolls), so that's when lots of them retire from the workaday world (and, yes, some go on to second careers and whatnot...this I know). I'll take the early qualification rate benefits when I can get them, but to be frank, I'll probably even forget to bring it up when it is a possibility. My plan is to keep my head down and my mouth shut and exit the other end at 65, having minimized my out-of-pocket health care costs. Then, after retirement, the plan from there is to move to the country, raise lots of chickens and sell eggs, shelter a pair of rescue burros, and cultivate berries, fruit trees, and kitchen garden stuff.

I still don't think it's fair that men have to wait 5 more years to get to retirement. We have a shorter average life-span than women, so should be getting off earlier!

Juju! (I think I remember someone of that name...) Flying visit, or have you got over most of your house building and family things? Sorry, I know I've been scarce of late. The simple answer is that for the moment life is even more complicated, but hopefully will calm down soon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WG!!! (I had to shout in case you couldn't hear me from that far over the hill ;D ) Wise. Not only that, I have amplification in one ear because it is losing its effectiveness with age. The other ear has no such amplification because it it pointless, given the profundity of the deafness in that ear (installed by an otorhinolaryngological surgeon of epic arrogance). My vocabulary is presently overusing the term "huh"? Dawg, aging is such fun.

The simple answer is that for the moment life is even more complicated, but hopefully will calm down soon. Here's hoping. Do what you have to now, of course. You mentioned your dad in another thread, but how's your mum? And ... your kitchen?

My dad has been refitting the kitchen, in between golf and holidays in Scotland. He's added a layer of insulation to the outside wall, added a new ceiling, repainted the walls and cupboards, had a new cooker fitted, and still there are more things going on. Assistance from a qualified gas fitter and me lugging things around, otherwise pretty amazing what he is capable of.

He probably knows the golf courses in the area since we used to holiday in Druidston in St David's Bay. Sadly, no he's not bored yet!

Tangent are you saying the retirement age there is different for men than women?? It is but that will change over the next five years. Since 1948 when the Welfare State was introduced, the retirement age for men has been 65 and the retirement age for women, 60. From May 2010, the retirement age for women has been slipping back so that from November 2018 onwards, both men and women will retire at 65.

Okay. That makes more sense. I can't imagine the logic behind the different ages of retirement!
