I shall go to the pub tonight to meet a friend who 'wants to talk'. I'm not exactly looking forward to it.

Sounds like a situation where you need a stiff drink before going to the pub ...

Nothing sums it up more for me than the memory of sitting in the Lounge at the local guest house (which was frankly a good deal more comfortable than my grubby house tho everyone was too polite to actually put it that way) and realising that myself, Colin, Joe Pee, Genie, Karla and Steve were ALL, at one point, sitting tapping away on various different mobile devices. I think only Alan wasn't I only looked for a couple of minutes because everyone else seemed to be in their own little worlds! I am more than happy to disconnect for a while.

Me too!
I did sometimes feel sad that we had come thousands of kilometres to do what we could have done at home. :-(

Au contraire. To me it's a sign of trust and security with each other that we were comfortable (ok maybe not all comfortable?) with taking silent non-talking time together. It's a key thing for introverts and a key thing in male friendships. Even if I am generalising. It's not as if we did it *all* the time - plus to me at least it was quite funny.

Generalising is what your sort does! When I started going on net meetups there was almost no broadband even. I do think now there is too much of a compulsion to be on Twitter, Facebook and the like, sadly.

I also love that I could feel comfortable not talking for periods at a time. One of the things about social interaction that is most difficult for me is the obligation to keep up a conversation even when you can't think of anything to say. Sometimes I just want to be silent and it's cool to me to be around friends who also feel that way.

Exactly. Some of the time I was quite surprised that I felt sociable and gregarious even after 5 days ... perhaps I was less lively by Tuesday in Whitehaven than Saturday/ Sunday in Wales ... wearing down a bit. Feeling able to be in company but not do or say anything is good for this.
Actually, if I'd driven/trained 300 miles and said hello to all of you and sat in the Mansion's lounge on the forum and uploading photos (which is what I recall doing) it would still have been worthwhile!

heh it was fun Prolonged socialising really gets me down normally and I know I was not at my most social (which for me is not actually social at all) when you were all here. But I was still very glad to see you
