He is still quite lovable, but he's running a temperature and has little energy for play. He has a modest appetite, but eats in small amounts; he has lost weight. He sleeps a lot and snuggles a lot.
He went to a second opinion vet today. He had an xray that clearly shows a fluid buildup in his abdominal cavity. Tomorrow he goes to a specialist. Swimmer is hoping that it is some other intestinal blockage or allergic response; his white blood cell counts do not jibe with the FIP diagnosis. They also took another blood sample in an attempt to rule out FIP.
Yeah... "it sometimes just happens." That sounds a lot like FIP...due to exposure to a mutated coronavirus, the particular feline's immune system is unable to overcome it and turns against the body itself. There is no treatment and the result is fatal. There is a 'wet' form and a 'dry' form...if Picard is a victim, he is most definitely a 'wet' form, given the fluids accumulating in his abdomen.
Yeah...We haz a major sad. Both of us have been sniffling all weekend.

Poor wee mite. And poor WG and Swimmer, not nice at all. Huggles to all.

This evening, our veterinarian dropped by our home after her shift was finished at the nearby clinic and administered a strong sedative followed by a euthanizing injection that stopped his little heart.
Picard is gone. He died cradled in my arms. I have subsequently buried his remains in the stairwell rose garden, very near his favorite napping spot in the sun. I, however, have a face full of snot and tearstains. *sniff*
What a wondrous little soul he was in the all too short a time he had with us. I'm crushed because he was such a strong positive personality...a True Overlord.
Once again, I am ronin.

Very sad to hear that. Poor kitten and poor family.
If Robert de Niro suggest a job though... maybe don't.

I'm so sorry. Poor little guy. But you were a good family for him and his life was a good one because of you.

I am so so sorry My vet said that sometimes kittens just don't make adulthood. It's apparently a lot harder to get them there than most people would think.
