I'd give them a go. They're not great literature I admit, but they're a quick and easy read and Meyer can spin a good yarn. The sparkles, biology & reproduction, and the politics of vampires & wolves are satisfactorily explained within the context of the narrative. And Bella isn't half as annoying as she's portrayed in the film. Once you've read them, you'll be able to judge for yourself whether you should have read them or not. Like Moose, I doubt I'll revisit them, but I don't resent the time spent on them.

Not annoying? Oh my god I thought she was the dumbest, stupidest, vapidest, horriblest most annoying twat I ever did read. Well Edward was probably even worse than Bella....then again, probably not. S

Well maybe a little bit as I got to yell a lot while reading them which does have it's own source of enjoyment I suppose. I think I particularly disliked them because they started out OK. When I was reading the first few chapters Bella seemed alright. She didn't like the cold (can totally empathise), she didn't really want to hang around her mum and new boyfriend but didn't want to make some big fuss so decided to try living with dad. Her dad seemed nice, in fact he remained about the only decent character in the story and maybe Alice. But then she gets to school and it just all goes wrong, horribly, horribly wrong.

That whole fascination with Edward is extremely unhealthy if you ask me. I get loads of book reports on it and I dislike them the more book reports I read. Bella gets more pathetic and Edward unreal with every one of them.

Maybe they'll move on to a new obsession soon now the movies are over and the books getting older...

Perhaps, but for as far as I've seen, kids build their own hypes and we adults just tend to follow them. I don't think we've seen the last of Twilight, especially not as there are also related books apparently. Already had a book report on one. Another great love-story, but in the end one of them dies and the other one joins his killers and lives happily ever after. As weird as I've come to expect.

That whole fascination with Edward is extremely unhealthy if you ask me. I knew a woman in her mid-twenties who was completely obsessed with Edward and even used Cullen as her last name on a German social network. She was also obsessed with the band Tokio Hotel. I find it scary that adult women fall for this teenage stuff.
