I have just encountered Wentworth Prison... "Australia's most famous correctional centre opens its gates for the first time in 27 years in this edgy re-imagining of Prisoner: Cell Block H." Aside from the name of the prison and copying names and aspects of a few characters, it bears no resemblance whatsoever to the original programme. I started to get bored of it after less than five minutes and started skipping forward. There seems to be a dearth of stuff these days, trying to just copy old stuff and get credence off of it, instead of making original content, and it seems to be getting worse!

It's a difficult one. With TV 24/7 not not to mention all the other mediums our desire to be constantly entertained is obviously going to cause difficulties for the people whose job it is to provide that entertainment. Also many people crave the familiar and the comfortable and novelty is often disappointing. In the days when there was only one TV channel operating for about 6 hours each day it was relatively easy. Going back still further before TV a musical hall turn often had only one act which he was able to repeat ad infinitum because he was always playing to a different audience. In recent years Morecambe and Wise for instance were under tremendous pressure to come up with programmes which were consistently funny: no easy task, but they usually managed it. Perhaps the answer is to find something else to do, read a book perhaps.

The amount of TV I watch these days is decreasing significantly, but I still don't believe that they are incapable of creating new content, it's just that they are just being lazy and trying to ride on the back of previous things. In the case of Wentworth Prison, they could rename all the characters, prison, etc. and have the same product, yet people would be more reluctant to watch something "new" even though it was ultimately the same programme. I think this sketch from A Bit of Fry and Laurie says it all (points awarded for identifying the blonde sitting with Hugh Laurie).

"They" are the people who ought to do something about "that".

*agrees with JoeP* They are those who are responsible for the badness! They are the people I want to slap! They are the people who make money out of making things more crap than they should be!

I enjoyed Cell Block H, but this new thing is just not it. It's not a remake, they've just used it as bait to get people who watched Cell Block H to look at it. You also got to play the "spot the characters from other soaps" game!
Cell Block H is one of the few programmes to have had the decency to wind up once they had had a decent run and also does not treat itself as any kind of realistic portrayal of prison. It is just entertainment.

Today, I found out that they've remade Robocop... www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEOX0PkG4_oDoesn't look as good as the original. *Sigh* Why can't these people write something new instead of trashing old stuff!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
