Last Friday, Frank got a guinea-pig from the animal shelter, as some of you might have seen on Facebook by now. He is a long-haired guinea-pig which is something we never wanted, but we instantly fell in love with him. Frank named him Gilbert and he is incredibly cute. Since he was castrated right before we got him, he still is in a cage on his own, but at the beginning of October, we want to try to pair him up with Spotty. They are flirting quite a bit already since his cage is next to Spotty's. She has been alone since Basil died and that isn't good for guinea-pigs and since she can absolutely not get along with her siblings, we got Gilbert to get her a little friend.

I thought he was a little dog at first

I also though he looked like a tiny dog, but then Kaylee doesn't strike me as a dog person, either!

Actually, I am a dog person, we just can't have a dog at the moment.

I didn't doubt he had a nose, I just thought it was buried under his hair or on the other side of his face.

We gave him a haircut, so now it is quite clear which end is which. We took him out on our laps last night and I started stroking him genetly. He loved it! He relaxed and started making these little happy sounds that the others make as well. I love that little one to bits already.

Not at all yet. He has to stay by himself until the beginning of October. For up to six weeks after the castration, they might still be able to make babies.

Gilbert was flirting a lot with Spotty yesterday. Less than two weeks now, poor things!

Two weeks before you can let them be together?

Yes. He is trying to bit through the bars of his cage now to get to her.

We paired Gilber up with Spotty yesterday. There was a lot of bickering and it didn't look good at first, but it is getting better now and they times of peace between them are getting longer and longer and the bickering sounds a lot less serious. I think it has worked.

That shouldn't happen since he has been castrated. If there were tiny ones, it would be dangerous for Spotty. Guinea-pig females must have babies before they are one year old or never since after the first year, their hip bones become too firm and the babies will not have enough space.

Does that mean someone has a PhD in guinnea pig hips?

I never expected guinnea pigs to be so interesting.
