I don't get any channels that show this but I've been watching it round at a friend's house - she gets Lovefilm - and I'm halfway through season 2 now.
Thoughts, anyone? I can't help thinking La Moose would love it. Have you seen/read any, Jo?

I love Game of Thrones. I've read the books and loved them, so I was very anxious about the tv series. But it's really true to the books, much to my relief.

I saw most of the series so far first, and it inspired me to read the books. Love both. The second part of series 3 I saw after reading the books that far and was thus a different experience. Not sure which way around I would recommend.

I liked the books until the last one which I couldn't find interesting enough to finish reading. I think we saw the first season of the tv show which was pretty good though far too much boobs.

I am on the fifth book now and find it compelling enough, though now that I am caught up with the tv series I am in less of a hurry to read on and thus it is taking a while. The plot stuff happens at the same time in book 4, so the characters we follow seem to have been split up into one book or another, luckily I have some characters in each one that I find interesting enough to want to know what happens.

I must admit, I do get a bit confused with all the characters - not just the ones you see but the ones they make reference to. I think I read somewhere it has the largest cast list of any TV series.
I agree about the boobs/sex scenes - I think a lot are completely gratuitous, but it's still a good watch.

I haven't read the books, but stopped watching episode one because of all the nakedness, gore and blood and wanton killing going on. I'd probably like the story otherwise.

After the first 10 minutes, which has inklings of a supernatural thriller, it very much becomes a story of political intrigue, set in a mock-medieval-England type place. I basically would like historical fiction like the Borgias and the Tudors, except for the annoying little liberties they take with history. Which is why fictional history in the same vein suits me better.

I still think Jo should be made to watch / read it.

Gratuitous nudity and sex scenes?! When's it on?

Comicbookgirl19 has some interesting videos with summaries and background history for those who haven't read the books:

Looks good. I've still only seen season 1 and never did finish the latest book.

I just finished book 5. A bit nervous about how much they changed the series from the books. I have an idea Series 4 is basically just the last third of book 3, though.

I daren't watch the trailer for season 4 as I haven't finished season 3 yet. No spoilers, please!

Has anyone else seen Series 4 Episode One yet?

I have. I have recently read all five books, and season 4 of the show is still in book 3, meaning there are new characters I never saw in the show before imagining them, and now seeing them is slightly unsettling. It was easier to relate to the characters in the books that I had a previous visual image of in my head from the show.

I sense that you don't like having to use your imagination

It's more difficult. And then they confuse me by being all... different.

Maybe they should have consulted you first so they could cast the right actors in each role!

One guy at work gets very excited by the program, but from what I've seen of it, I'm not all that fussed. One thing I do like is that no character seems to be safe. The idea that anyone can be written out in a sword stroke does appeal in a way as too many programmes lose a lot of suspense by knowing that certain characters are fixed and cannot be written out, no matter how much peril they are in at any point. I remember the outrage when Tasha Yar was written out of Star Trek TNG and it is very odd to see the episode. You "know" that they always survive such things one way or another and then you get to the end of the episode and she's still dead!

I watch it but I feel like I'm torturing myself. Not just all those atrocities, tortures, multilations, beheadings. But the author seems to gloat in killing off the characters we've grown fond of. My favourites are now Jon Snow, Arya Stark, the dwarf, the lady with the dragons and Brienne. But I'm constantly worried when I watch if the author is killing them off in this episode.
I have also trouble understanding all these kingdoms, all these persons, how they are related, what happened in the past etc. I've tried to borrow the books from the library but they are never in.
The setting reminds me not so much of fantasy as of the series I, Claudius and Rome (cruelty and decadence).

After seeing some of Shakespeare's histories lately, I realized that a lot of the basic setting is based on the War of the Roses, and the power struggles and brutality that came with that. If you have ten minutes, this video I saw recently gives a interesting theory on why that book/tv series and other medieval fiction is so popular. (beware of book/season 1 spoiler at the end) I have little to no problem with characters dying, it makes it all the more realistic for me. Also, the way one action, word or event sends ripples that influences the course of things from then on and can have huge repercussions.

I have never watched it and don't intend to do so. It just doesn't sound like something I would like at all, especially with all the sex and violence. Whenever they advertise it here, it's mostly sex scenes or nasty violence.

Did anyone watch the 'honest trailer' of Game of Thrones?
