Is there any kind of world championship for the Travian game? I know there are such things for some very popular on-line games and there is HUGE prize money involved. The players who participate in such contests are often trained by gaming companies. Recently one Taiwanese team won the world championship of a certain game. I was very much amazed by the scale of the gaming industry and the popularity of some on-line games.

I think most of the really die hard players avoided it anyway.

You mean avoid the world championship? Why? It's a wonderful idea to enjoy playing the game and get some real money from it. That's me anyway.

It wouldn't pay well considering the number of hours you have to spend (18 hours a day seven days a week).

It's an all-consuming passion for a few months and then I would expect most of them to burn themselves out or develop some neurological disease.

But it seems to be some kind of career path for excellent players. From what I learned, it's almost like professional sports (the participants think so at least). And huge money is involved. Personally I don't think it's the kind of career that I would encourage my kids to pursuit: though my Franek is definitely very keen on games. I don't allow him much playing time on his Nintendo console, so instead, he is reading the Super Mario Bro. Wiki pages. He knows a lot about all the Mario games.

I've never really had an interest in playing computer games. Some simple ones I enjoyed as a child, but these days, I just play tetris one or twice a year.

The first computer game I saw was a game of ping pong that sounded very much like the opening few bars of the Birdie Song.

I can't even remember my first one. My father has had computers since before I was born. They have always been a part of my life, I think words like "computer" and "keyboard" were among the first that I learned. I think it might have been Flipper or something like that.

I have a friend whose son is a professional gamer. Companies sponsor him to go all over the world and play. And apparently, he does make some big bucks.

Kye, how old is your friend's son? I think professional gamers are usually young folk, as one grows older, one's reflex tends to slow down, hence less competitive. But that's just what I read.

I've met a couple of professional poker players - I don't mean people who play for themselves and win but people who are actually employed and on a salary to play in online games rooms. They do not, obviously get to keep any winnings they make but the games companies obviously consider it worth while to pay them by the hour to beat anyone who might win big bucks off them otherwise

I met someone who regularly went to Las Vegas for a holiday and came back with more than he went even after paying the air fare and the hotel bill.

Those people are in the minority! It can be done, but it's only when you play seriously and I'm pretty sure the only game in the normal casinos where you can win by skill is Blackjack. The thing to note is that generally, once someone starts to win anything major, the casino gets rid of them... they don't want people taking money away from them; that's not the point at all!

I have a friend who plays poker regularly and wins. He's not crazy over it though, unlike some of his other friends... CB, my friend's son is in his early 20's, so his reflexes are still good.

I have to say, this was far different from any other computer game I'd ever played before, or since for that matter. It did require an awful large time commitment, to be done properly, and if you weren't willing to fork over real cash*, others could quickly overtake you.
*I did so only minimally, and that was from a PayPal account funded from other money-making ventures, and since I never actually saw that cash, it wasn't missed when I spent it.
It was fun, though, I have to admit. Though there were times when I knew I'd be attacked but there was no way for me to stay up and try to pull of some sort of defense. But that was why you tried to have a sitter in a different time zone to help you out.
