an elderly kitteh ... perhaps one that has no desire to go out but just, like Pip, wants to be loved and to sit around sleeping, eating, bugging a human and licking its bum. Can't do it atm as financial situation is bad, but if it ever recovers maybe it would be an idea .. what do people think? I really, really do not want any more cats that get unhappy if not allowed out and then get themselves squashed or disappear or anything. And there must be lots of older cats who are desperate for a human to love them in their twilight years. One downer, though, would be the potential for large vet bills and also the fact that .. well, elderly cats die (but so do young ones) and losing a pet is very painful. But it's an idea I am playing with, maybe to do sometime next year. What do you all think?

It's a difficult decision. I have lived with cats most of my life and find them adorable and wonderful company. However, we have to be realistic and accept that sometimes it's not a wise thing to do.

Old animals are really expensive. And when they get sick they cause a lot of worrying. I have an old dog that I love a lot. But I'd never get a new old dog...

Well what if I got a 'new' old cat on the grounds that if it did develop a serious illness I simply could not afford the vet's bills but that would otherwise be put down as a lot of elderly cats are if they find themselves at shelters? At least I could give an old cat a happy last year or two

You're right that it would be better for the cat than being put down. But it's not the cat I'm worried about...

well I have lost three cats in the last two years So I guess I can handle it. It is the thought of losing Pip that I cannot bear. But I suppose I worry too that if I did take on such a cat - an elderly one I mean - I would not be able to bond with it because I would be afraid of it dying

It's a consideration.
Not an easy decision. Do you think Pip would be happy with another cat around?

I am still trying to work out how we're going to get my cat and dog integrated!

An older cat will be used to whatever it has experienced before, so I don't know what the possibility is of getting an indoor cat. And then you have to make sure you always have the doors and windows closed, as even indoor cats will escape if given the chance and they will be in a lot of trouble out there as they don't know the outdoor world. My 100% indoor cats are now 7 and always trying to make a break for freedom.

Our cat used to be indoor/outdoor but when my parents moved the cat was only allowed to be indoor because it's in a protective native wildlife area. So now for years she's been indoor. A few times she tried to escape but now she doesn't even do that.

We only let our cat out of the back door because we live on a moderately busy road but she tries to escape out of the front door when she can.

Pip in general is not interested in going out and I can safely leave windows open. Now and then he will decide he is going to be Adventure Cat and go outside, but he normally turns and runs for home before he's got five paces

Pip must be properly adult now? And he didn't much take to Molly if I remember rightly? Which suggests to me that he's probably quite happy having you all to himself. I can't talk though Moose. I've never listened to my own advice in this respect

Sadly, they were starting to get on (or at least tolerate each other) when Molly went AWOL. There is still Tinker and, more to the point, Honey to consider coming up.

Pip is seven now and starting to slow down .. not that he was ever very speedy. I just thought some company might be good for him. Molly was pretty hostile to him tho

You can have my two. They ruined my beloved oak table yesterday while I was out, so good riddance

Though they are sleeping very peacefully and cute looking next to me at the moment, so maybe I'll keep them around a bit longer.

My kitchen has that puffy vinyl on the wall... covered in scratches. Also, the wooden edges to the archway between the kitchen and living room is severely scratched up. It would be worse, but Honey stops him doing it most days.

This cat seems pretty relaxed about life. Tinker would never stand for this...

Wow, your cats ruin a lot. Am happy we have guinea-pigs instead. And we often get tempted to buy more.

But of course.
Zombies are terrible for scratching when trying to get into your fortress.

No. I am referring to actual zombies outside Miisa's fortress of solitude aka flat.
