This thread was inspired by a Facebook post which linked to the following article: It's Thanksgiving, so we asked Brits to label the US — We're so sorry, America. I'd like to think you all might do better than those folks. This one really made me chuckle: So then, at the end of that story, I followed the link to a similar article which turned the tables. Uh oh ... Americans try to place European countries on a map. Yeah. I know. I shuddered before even clicking on this one. Some of the Brits did a better job labeling US states than some Americans could, so I just knew this was going to be good. And I'll admit, I'd struggle a little bit on a blank European map, but I'd do pretty well. I also have to include on of the attempts on Europe, so enjoy: I'm reminded of once seeing a link to a site where you could test your geographical knowledge by putting in country names on blank maps, mainly by continents. I know I'm really bad with Africa, but did pretty well with the rest of the world, in general.

Obligatory xkcd: I do wonder how far I'd get on a map of US states too though. For some reason we never got that one in primary school geography. I love the ' Kamchatka Peninsula' remark. Could have been me.

I know Texas and Florida. I hardly know the names of the states in the US, let alone where they are.
I only know where some of the counties are in the UK even.

I know how to spell Mississippi. And that it's a river and a state. Not sure I could find the state on a blank map. Prop the river, since irrc, that goes north to south into the Gulf of Mexico, somewhere to the west of Texas. Unless I'm awfully wrong.

I could definitely name plenty of states but not sure how well I'd place them. I once took the trouble to learn because so many of the books I read were set somewhere in the US and it's annoying when you don't know where you are reading about.

I scored 91% on this quiz. There was a time when I would have got them all right but I've forgotten some of them.

I'd do pretty well on the American and European map. Africa might be okay-ish, but Asia is beyond me, though I can name quite a few countries there. Just have no clue where to find them. Couldn't do a quiz on UK counties though

The Mississippi - Great lakes area is a blur to me. Know what is there, just not in what order. Same with Eastern Europe. And I actually did ok at the test in school about those.

I got 30% on the Africa one and most of those were guesses. Tonight is Learn the Countries of Africa night. You can test me this time tomorrow and I'd better get over 90%

I can never use those acronyms. Even if I remember the phrase, the thing it represents is still lost. If I can remember the names in the first place, I can remember the list without it!

okay I've got The Gambia, that's the tiny one, and Senegal which it seems to be in the middle of. Below those are Guinea and Sierra Leone - Guinea is the big one. Liberia under that, Ivory Coast next door. Gonna take a break now or I will start to not retain info

Just to recap what I've learned so far: MATLE is Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egpypt along the top, and under Egpyt is The Sudan and then Southern Sudan under that.
From South Africa up it goes SNACG which is Namibia Angola Congo Gabon, with Equitorial Guinea above that
Botswana and Zimbabwe are attacked to SA, with Lesotho and Swailand in the middle of it. Zambia is above Zimbabwe. To the right are Malawi and Mozambique, from North to South
Gambia is tiny one on West coast.Attached to Senegal. Guinea below, then Sierra Leone. Liberia. Ivory Coast. Niger and Nigeria a little along, from South to North. Break time.

Heh...I'd stumbled across those 'map challenges' whilst on FB. I giggled a lot. I'm fairly good (but not perfect) at maps, what with my whole social studies teacher background. Plus I'm an avid virtual traveler. I could have been the person who filled out the map DG posted up. Still, I couldn't even begin to name the various English and Scottish counties, and I'm willing to bet that lots of my compatriots, even college edjumacated ones, would assume that Whales was somewhere near Scotchland.
That said, I too can relate to the Kamchatka remark, having learned some geographical facts in unordinary ways. Also, my geographical knowledge of Africa is sadly lacking (and telling, as noted) and I probably know more physical geography than I do political or human geography of that continent. On the other hand, I suspect that I know far more about Asia than most Americans. Than most Europeans, even. Possibly more than many Asians. I know about Sogdians and the transmission of Buddhist teachings, and the presence of Nestorian churches in the Tian Shan, for crepes' sake. And yet, I'm always learning more.

Prop the river, since irrc, that goes north to south into the Gulf of Mexico, somewhere to the west east of Texas. Unless I'm awfully wrong. Hey...I fixed that for you. You had the right idea, just the wrong direction. Louisiana is wedged, to the east of Texas, between the state of Mississippi, on it's east. The Mississippi River forms the greatest portion of the state of Mississippi's western border with Louisiana and Arkansas. Along the Gulf coast, from west to east, are the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. The Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico at the Delta, in which N'Orleans is located, in Louisiana.

Technically it is also west of Texas; just an awful lot further!

I scored 91% on this quiz. There was a time when I would have got them all right but I've forgotten some of them. I got: 43% on the US map, 84% on the European one (I'm really fuzzy on the former Eastern Bloc countries), 34% for Africa , 70% for Asia, and 86% for British Counties (got confused with some of the Northern ones).

Hey...I didn't realize there was a whole raft of other tests.
So...I aced both the US and European nations with 99%. With Asia, I got 100% on the nations, but only 81% on the Asian capitals. Then I took the English counties test....41% thanks to knowing the southwestern counties and some of the northern counties. I just don't know one damned shire from another.
On the Europe test, it was the Baltics that were my stumbling block. I know the three nation names, but I've never been clear on which one is where in relation to the others.
