There's a banner ad for Shelter at the top of my page, the entirely admirable charity that helps the homeless. Cue a picture of two small, bemused but cute looking children and a text saying how much they'd love a home to call their own. And then comes 'Support Shelter: Donate fifty pounds today'.
Say what? I haven't GOT fifty pounds. I would happily give them a little money but specifying fifty pounds is not good and, I suspect, simply puts a lot of potential donors off. Why not just say 'please give what you can, anything at all'?

Maybe they still get more money than if they get a few pounds off of each person. There would be far less administration costs and processing fees so they'd end up with more of the donations.

I dunno. Are processing costs for a charity really that much?

I meant the bank charges to make card transactions. I don't think they tend to give charities a break. They may do, but I certainly don't expect they do it for free.

Somebody mentioned recently they went to donate 10 dollars to a charity at a shopping mall in Oz, and were told sorry, they only take minimum donations of 20 dollars. Perhaps admin costs are an issue but it does seem a bit weird, especially if we're talking about cash donations.
