In light of the downing of the Russian passenger plane, apparently almost certainly as a result of a bomb being smuggled on board, does anyone feel nervous about flying in the future? I gather that Egyptian airport security was frankly rather lax (totally lacking, according to some sources). How likely is it that a flight could be downed from out of, for instance, Heathrow, or JFK or something?

Well, as I figure, I am much more likely to die at home than in a plane.

And even more likely to die from driving into a moose.

Flying always makes me a little nervous - but more from the idea of crashing than the idea that a bomb is going to explose inside. It just pisses me off that we have these stupid rules about liquid restrictions which are competely useless and cause a lot of extra work and angst for someone like myself who can't find hard contact lens solution for under 100ml; meanwhile people can get bombs on board in their stowed luggage.

The liquid restrictions are I'm sure much more about being seen to do something than having any real effect.

Surely you can transfer the solution you have into a smaller travel-sized empty bottle? I used to have everything in those before I started leaving a whole second life at JoeP's place...
Takeoff and landing are thrilling both for the speed and the knowledge that that is when things are likely to go wrong, but overall flights are mostly boring. Especially now as I don't even get a meal any more. But I bring by own sandwich, partly to annoy the person next to me.

I hadn't flown for ages till a couple of years ago. I found I wasn't nervous - I was pretty philosophical about the whole idea of crashing. However, I really didn't enjoy it because I hated what it did to me physically - taking off I thought my head was going to explode, and then I had this weird pressure thing the whole time, which made me really nauseous.

Even if you aren't afraid, commercial air travel can be pretty horrible - the air pressure changes causing those head pains, being cramped into a tiny seat (width and leg room), annoying people next to you eating their sandwiches ...

I don't mind air travel, except it's so boring. I have short legs so I'm usually okay unless the flight is over 10 hours. But I usually stand up and walk around on those flights.

The pressure usually doesn't bother me any more, I think my body now just knows to keep swallowing or whatever else it does to equalise the pressure in the ears, so I don't even notice it any more. Flying when having a cold might be very different, though.

...can't find hard contact lens solution for under 100ml... I wonder if that could be considered a medically necessary liquid. There are exceptions for medically necessary liquids.

I once flew when I was getting the flu and that was awful. The 100 ml liquid rule is something I find difficult as well. So far, I haven't really worried about contact lense solution because throughout the past years, we have been flying to Birmingham and back and I knew I could get some there if my luggage got lost, so I didn't see the need of taking some in my hand luggage. I find the security checks difficult because I don't like strangers touching me which has happened occasionally when I had something on me that didn't go through the checks without problems. But I also find it tough to have to put my handbag, tablet, passport and shoes through the checks ad then being expected to collect my things and to put my shoes on within 10 seconds because they need the trays or there is no space. That can make me very anxious and angry because the anxiety over not collecting my belongings quickly enough causes me to get clumsy and then it takes even longer, while I'm expecting someone to yell at me any second.

I've thought about thqt but I'm not certain if another bottle would contaminate the solution. And I need a bottle which has a small hole so only a little comes out - though I assume I could find something like that somewhere. But it's finding something like that, in a plastic that I could sterilize, that is also tricky. I've overcome the problem for the moment by buying small containers of saline and I'll use that for storage and rinsing for the week we're in the Philippines. Sarah - I did also wonder if that might fall under medical requirement. I tried contacting the airline but didn't have any luck!
