What is mashed Swede? Hopefully something different from what I imagine now. My understanding is that a 'swede' (as versus as 'Swede') is a colloquialism for 'Swedish turnip', or what many of us here in the US call a rutabega. I think turnips, generally, or, for that matter, any root vegetable not a potato, may come under the rubric of 'swede'. I think the 'mashed' portion is to distinguish it from 'boiled' or 'raw'. In my youth, I was required to deal with not only rutabegas, but turnips, and kohlrabi. I detested them all, along with broccoli. Cruel jokes all, perpetrated upon innocent youth in their naivete.

Spinach! With vinegar!
Brussels sprouts with butter!
Beetroot, either way!
Artichokes with mayo!
Cauliflower raw!
Why settle for turnips when you can have the real thing, taters?

Anything is better with vinegar but I did not eat cooked spinach. Anything is better with butter too. I've never had an artichoke.
