I had a gorgeous large flat mushroom for breakfast (along with scrambled eggs) in Sainsbury's supermarket on Tuesday. But I agree, tinned mushrooms are horrid.

Yes, texture was what alienated the kid WG. That disappeared some time in my teens, and I always went with 'cowboy' pizzas, which is pepperoni, black olives and mushrooms. Stand-alone sauteed fresh mushrooms came later, usually in the company of a nicely prepared steak. Slugs? You mean like escargot? Rumor has it that they are tres tastee. Avec fromage.

I suspect it was the texture and idea of sliminess that put me off as a child, but I rediscovered them later and love them now. The tinned ones I only really ever use on pizza where they do dry out in the oven, but I could imagine that they might be on the soggy/slimy side for anything else. But fresh ones are great, I recommend trying them chopped up in scrambled eggs. They add great flavour and feel with almost no calories or cost.

I had escargot in garlic butter once in Düsseldorf. I couldn't taste anything but garlic but the texture was Ok. Mushrooms don't have to be slimy. Ì guess it depends how they're cooked.
The other night, I dreamt I tried a portion of slug so that I could compare it with mushrooms and report back here. I boiled a slug in slightly salty water for five minutes and then cut a slice in the middle. It oozed yellow slime. I woke up before actually getting it in my mouth.

Mushrooms on pasta is devine. But not the boring and near tasteless champignons - get all sorts of tasty and wild mushrooms out. Bit of parmesan and it's a match made in heaven.

All mushrooms seem to taste the same to me but that said I've not tried all that many. I wonder what truffles taste of?

Subtle differentiation is the mycogourmet's delight.
Some taste 'earthier' than others, while others can be more 'metallic'. Much of it is the perceiver's construct and highly subjective. It can become quite effete.
I've always imagined that truffles have undertones of pig slobber. Otherwise, they taste of a LOT of money. It might be just me.
So...The first rains of fall have hit and more is to come this next week. The forest floor should be littered with new fungi, thanks to the new damp.

I don't trust myself, either. But, I do have friends that I trust and it is a common outdoor activity in this region. This coming weekend the forests will be populated with large numbers of 'off-trail hikers' with their staffs, poking around in the ferns and underbrush.
We get locally gathered morrels and shiitake at the nearby fruit stand (along with the typical button mushrooms).

I wonder how our ancestors decided which mushrooms were safe to eat? And you can extend that idea to most food.
I suppose after a few people died horribly, the remaining villagers would try very small amounts of any newly discovered potential foods - and then if it proved to be tasty and there were no ill-effects, they'd gradually build up the amount consumed till they could declare it 'safe'.
