I would bunker down in my pjs and bake things in the oven.

PJs and baking is a fantastic way to spend a day. :-)

I have just been mowing the Rectory garden grass, at this time of year it takes about 90 minutes but gradually speeds up as cut the grass shorter, it was on a #5 today, for the second time of cutting.

Does it now lead into Narnia?

It led to Charn. Not a nice place. I had to fix that.

944 712 There's no law - that I know of - that says you can't start on #1. Indeed not, but that would have taken much much longer because of the growth of grass (and been much harder work) next time will be on #4.

Hmm, I set my mower on 5 last year and then 3 a few days later. It allowed vigorous growth which caused a greater expenditure of energy overall. This year, I set it at 3 and am satisfied that that reduces the amount of effort involved.

I am all in favour of reduced effort. It is a lovely garden and I only wish I had the time to develop it properly: there is a magnificent horse chestnut in the middle of the meadow, I had it pollarded two years ago but before that it had a spread of about eighty feet - it was somewhat neglected. There is a stand of three Scotch pine in a triangle (very Victorian) and a couple of nice oaks; there are too many sycmores and other smaller trees, in fact the person who cares for the garden for me has cut down more than a dozen trees in the last couple of years and it does not really show, except that the house is much lighter inside.

944 709 I'm pleased to say it's been decades since I've used a lawn mover. I've always been in an apartment, or a place where it woas someone else's job. I don't care for gardening. I had a parishioner once who was scandalized by that. "You're the only priest I've EVER HEARD OF who doesn't like to garden!" she accused. Tough titty.

944 701 I guess you're one of those priests who wouldn't (necessarily) say "tough titty". It is not a phrase that would come to my lips as a matter of course ... and I am not sure how to render it into the Grey Speech.

I would imagine there would be several different versions of it in the Grey Speech!

I'm very contented. I had a lovely dinner of eye fillet steak with sweet potato chips and salad. And then dessert of portugese tarts. And it was all washed down with a very nice wine (thanks to you all!).
