Recently, one of my pupils wrote a summary of the frist chapter from the first Twilight book. So far, I have never wanted to read them. I watched the three first films, thought it was a very silly lovestory and way over the top and decided never to read the books, but since they are talked about that much these days, I'm beginning to feel like I've missed out on an important piece of genral knowledge. So I'm wondering if I should get them and read them. I'd feel embarrassed having them on the shelves though. Maybe those who have read them can help me, are they worth reading? I mean for an adult and not just for dreamy teenagers? Is my brain going to come out of my ears if I read them?

Yes, your brain is going. And if you've seen the movie then I don't think you need to read the books as from what I can tell the movies follow the books pretty faithfully. You can of course read the books and get very annoyed and yell at them as I did, but you will never get those hours back. You've already wasted them on the film. And as you say, then you have those books on the shelf though you can do as I did and get rid of them by sending them to Africa.

Sending the books to Africa? Not sure I could do that if they are this bad, I don't have a problem with the Africans.

I know, I did feel a bit bad about that. It was a charity thingy happening at my work at the time and they were looking for books and I was looking to get rid of books.

I get lots of book reports on Twilight and it really did not make me want to read it. Same with Hunger Games. Though I did watch the first films of both series, just to make sure I really hated it. My pupils are very well aware of my opinion. I had a discussion with one once on how it was possible for a vampire to conceive a child. She came up with very bizarre reasons which made me think she'd better retake those home economics courses...

Besides: vampires just are not supposed to sparkle >_<

THAT is the fundamental thing wrong with these books, or at least a sign of it. If Meyer had just been able to say, "you know ... this facet of my dream vision ... just doesn't work, I should drop it" - and had done the same kind of editing throughout - it all might have been better.

I liked the Hunger Games, especially the first one. For one thing, the main character is female but that is never used as a "thing". She's competent, compassionate, and also makes mistakes. She is never objectified or sexualised as pretty much every other movie with a female action hero is. They hardly even dwell on the romance thing too which is quite nice. And in Hunger Games there are consequences to your actions unlike Twilight. I would not put Hunger Games and Twilight anywhere near the same category.
Not to mention they actually had a woman who could act in Hunger Games film version.

I have to say though, that I am happy overall for the existance of Twilight as it has mostly brought me a lot of joy in being able to listen to the scathing and hilariously funny book and movie reviews. Just to go Rotten Tomatoes and look at the quotes from reviews. My favourite though is Bum Reviews for all of the films. And Maven of the Eventide in her vampire reviews even manages to make an excellent vlog about the good points of Twilight. It's pretty impressive and just goes to show how smarts that woman is.

I'm going to have a look at these things. *grins* I think it's embarrassing that women in today's emancipated times fall for a very unemancipated story like Twilight.

What I find embarrassing is the obsession people suddenly had with 50 shades of grey...

They're a waste of your time if you already sat through the movie(s). Hunger Games was actually interesting in good way, not train-wreck or amateur autopsy interesting.

The "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman is worth reading, we think.

Oh my god how can you even mention that in the same thread as Twilight? You're talking about one of the most wonderful set of books ever written versus complete and utter trash. Shame on you!

It's a shame they never made the other two books into film.
I suppose I can't blame JoeP, come to think of it I bring up those books in ever post I make.

Maybe the Twilight books should have been dipped in glitter to simulate the sparkling effect!

I can simulate the effect of the Twilight saga by poking my fingers down my throat, while stabbing myself in the foot!

I was sent three of the books by a friend and bought the fourth myself. I quite enjoyed them but would probably not read them again
