I decided to give this a reread, just for fun. IT is one of my favourite books ever (and before anyone asks yes, I have seen the film and no, I do not rate it). I first read it when I was fourteen or so and have read it every few years since. It's a long read (no pun intended) but worth it. I am not generally fond of horror as a genre but King at his best transcends genre. It is simply great writing and great storytelling.

I've never read it or seen the movie but I did see the Nostalgia Critic review of the film which was hilarious.

If I recall correctly that is the one where he played the Stephen King drinking game. If ever there was a Stephen King book club they'd have a lot of fun playing drinking games!

My youngest was absolutely terrorized by the movie. She saw it (without my permission)when she was about 5 or 6 and it scared the bejessus out of her.

So this is like a friendly clown and not an evil one murdering kids?

Well, he says he's friendly but he looks pretty scary, so who knows. And all his sentences end in 'beep beep', just like Pennywise.

I've only seen the film, which I suspect cannot compare to the few extracts I have heard from the book. I enjoyed the first half or so of the film, but the ending stinks. Descriptive writing often falls flat when someone tries to manifest it into something solid.

Clowns give some kids nightmares so I'm not entirely convinced it's a good thing.

They are creepty. It's that plastered smile and the weird eyes. Last time I went to a circus type event the clown was more like a comedian which was much better as far less creepy and a lot more funny.

I don't like clowns at all and don't know anyone who does. Possibly their mothers do

Roly Bain is quite an amicable clown, as well as being an Anglican vicar. You'd probably like him.

No I really don't like any clowns at all. There is something just too sinister about them. Am getting on fairly well with IT though I am rereading a few other things as well atm.

One of the few Stephen King longer stories that actually have a decent ending too imo. I read it when younger and yeah, the movie is shite. Good creep factor in that tale and it reads very well.

yeah some of his endings are pretty crap. The Stand rather fizzled off after the first gazillion pages, though it remains my favourite of all his books.

Had the same problem with The Stand (I think I have a hardcover here, not sure if we're bringing that to Oz... Maybe we should). The problem seems he's not very good at wrapping up where he got his characters, while the journeys there are usually interesting if not outright intriguing. Currently reading one of his short stories selections. Quite a few are just simply good, without the trouble of being fattened up and needing an actual ending.

I read in an interview that he got stuck with The Stand and nearly ditched it halfway through. Then he decided to have Nadine and Harold blow up the committee and killed off some main characters which was a mistake IMO> The first half of The Stand is much better than the second

I think it could have worked better as just a novel about a superplague and without the supernatural element..

Not so much for me Watching Harold and Nadine's descent was fascinating but I dunno, the two halves of the book did not really gel well with me
