Last night I had to work in the bar again until 4:30 a.m. and today I feel like I have taken some awful drugs - or like I've turned into a zombie. I want to look for a new job in the new year.

4:30pm is far too late if you're not expecting it. That's awful The two nearest pubs to where I live have late night bar staff but the owners of the pubs always take over at midnight.

I actually don't really like working there anymore and working that late is a little too much. I have decided to look for a new job next year which won't be easy since it needs to be flexible and can't depend on school holidays like the tutoring.

I would definitely not want a job where you have to work past 2 am unless it paid extremely well. It sounds like exploitation to me.

I agree with Steve. However, though my translation job is 'flexible', I have to stay up late whenever there is bigger workload, since during the day I have other duties as a mom. And when the kids are around, it's just not possible to concentrate.

I used to work quite happily at the office until 11pm and occasionally at home until 2am but I was working in isolation with no one around me and that made it very much better. (In my 30s I spent a period of time working shifts but always finished by 12.30am.)

Working with lots of different people has become diffciult for me. My boss is very nice as a boss and pays us well and we're allowed to drink there for free, but I'd rather work with less people in a different environment and preferably during the day. I've just changed too much for that job.

I'm not very productive in the evenings. My best time for working is early morning.

The bar I work in has to close at 2am during the week. On weekends, we could stay open until ten in the morning or later if we wanted to.

Conversely, you could close at 2am at weekends could you not?

A colleague of mine held the record for the amount of time working continuously in one day. He managed to clock up 25 hours on a day when the clocks went back.

Good luck in your search for something better! It won't be easy, but I'm hoping to find somthing that is paid as well and where the working conditions are alright.

I don't suppose you could renegotiate your working conditions, Kaylee.

In the bar? No. It is open in the evenings so that's when I have to work. It' also the people and the soap opera stories going on there. I just don't want to be part of that anymore.

Fair enough. I hope you find something else that is less stressful.

I can be ok with it, but working at night is very difficult.

Last night I worked in the bar for the last time this year. Now I will still need to give a German lesson today and tonight is Frank's party. He will be 45 tomorrow.

I'll show this to Frank. 45 is a good age and he is fit and a very young 45. I feel very lucky to have him in my life.
