In this country we currently have zebra, pelican and puffin crossings. Pelican and puffin crossings are basically a set of traffic lights with a cross request button for pedestrians. The only major difference is that puffin crossings have the pedestrian signals next to the request button and pelican crossings are opposite. The panda crossing seems to be a failed attempt to improve the zebra crossing. By making the pedestrians press a button, instead of just walking into the road. All the naming seems to be is an obsession with black and white animals.

Zebra I get, the others are just variations that don't deserve their own name.

They are very different things. With a zebra crossing, there are no traffic lights, the pedestrians just have right of way. Unfortunately, this leads to people just wandering into the road and the cars being obligated to stop for them. When I go out with Honey, I often have the problem of people assuming we're going to cross, even though we are not.
