Unfortunately carbohydrates got a bad name, thanks to things like the Atkins Diet. I find it amusing now how all the people who sell carbohydrate rich products, such as breakfast cereals sell it using phrases such as "slowly releases energy all day to keep you going" and don't mention that people don't stop buying the "evil" stuff.
It reminds me of years back when the BSE "mad cow" issue came about. Sales of Steak and Kidney pies went up and Beef and Onion crisps went down. People didn't seem to think that the pies were made using beef produce and the nearest the crisps would have been to a cow is to have been planted in a nearby field.

Strange things people.
I am about to catch the bus (need a big net) and travel over to the university for a day nesting amongst the books, although I do have to go to a class - 'How to manage your supervisor' - I shall have a very concentrated day I suspect but might treat myself to sung Evensong in the cathedral at the end of it.
My target is to finish writing a review of a near contemporary autobiography of one of my key figures because this term's project is a high level evaluation of his contribution to my field. Fortunately, the 'he' in question (Abp. T. Randall Davidson) was very fond of publishing his sermons so there is a lot of primary source material.
He was the first ABC to travel to N. America, which he did as the guest of J.P. Morgan, who met the entire cost of the visit transporting Davidson, Mrs. D and the chaplains around in the Morgan Family's private train. They even went to Montreal, Fr. Karla!

Carbs are fine provided they release energy slowly over the day. Many give you a quick sugar boost that sends your blood sugar levels rocketing only to have insulin take it down again and leave you hungrier than you were an hour ago. Breakfast cereals containing oatmeal, wholemeal flakes and nuts release their energy slowly. They don't stop you eating the bad stuff but they provide constant blood sugar levels which tell your brain that you aren't hungry and that makes you less likely to eat the bad stuff.

That's why I usually prefer oatmeal.

959 168 Not in love with oatmeal. I do try to add nuts and wholemeal flour to our bread. None of us at home has distinctive sweet tooth.

I've just spent two hours trying to calm a friend of mine down from a panic attack. She was trying to log in to her late husband's bank account and typed in the details wrongly. Then the phone rang and an Indian man told her there was something seriously wrong with her computer and could she tell him the computer's ID. Of course it was a scam and it was just a coincidence that he rang straight the failure to log into the bank account but it gave her a severe panic attack. I had to calm her down, ring up the bank to check nothing was amiss and do a virus check on the computer. Agh!

959 162 Maybe in a generation or two people might be generally savvy enough that these kind of scammers won't be able to get anywhere, but I'm not holding my breath!

At my desk all day so far - have been helping to review a neighbouring diocese's emergency plan (it's dreadful) and making helpful suggestions ... as well as reminding them that von Clauswitz wrote that, 'no plan survives first contact with the enemy'.

Today is Tray's birthday ... he's 12! This means I have one year left before there's a teenager in my house!

Overslept this morning, Pat woke me to say I had a doctor's appointment in half an hour. I fumbled my way into the shower thinking I had ten more minutes than I had and got to the car with only four minutes to make the ten minute journey to the doctor's. So, I took the back way along unmade roads and country lanes. I got there with one minute to spare only to find a group of 100 ramblers had taken every single car parking spot in the nearest four car parks. In the end I was ten minutes late. I was not pleased.

959 149 I had to check what a rambler is. The question now is: why 100 ramblers? What's the occasion?

959 148 It's no particular occasion, it's just a group of people who like walking. Like these people: ramblers
