Another wholesome celebrity is currently being investigated on historic sex abuse charges. To be honest I'd be really surprised if Cliff had done anything of the sort - he's always struck me as a wholesome and decent person. One thing that makes me uncomfortable is that he's been named extensively without having been charged with anything. The law needs to change there. Even if guilty, he should have the right to anonymity till he is actually charged.

I'm keeping an open mind, but I do wonder about people jumping on the bandwagon as Cliff is a easy target. Not good about the press knowing about the raid on his house though.

No that was not really cool. The whole Rolf Harris thing did shake me a little. Makes you wonder about everyone.

I totally agree with the anonymity thing. It's sickening to see all the press making a huge deal over things and destroying reputations without evidence. Look at what Craig Charles went through, even prison, before he was found innocent of rape, back in the early 1990s.

I agree with the anonymity, it is not right that innocent people should be hounded and suffer any more than they have to when a person makes a false accusation.

And even if he is never charged or is charged and found not guilty his accusers will have anonymity. Though - I can see how naming accusers might make abuse victims even less likely to come forward. The best solution seems for BOTH parties to remain anonymous.

Yes, quite. I don't see why we don't.

This whole event also causes me concern.
Cliff Richard was out of the country at the time. He was at his home in Portugal. He is a very famous person who has to use a higher than usual level of security. It is unimaginable that he would not tell the local police force that his home would be unoccupied. His fame means that he runs a high risk of burglary.
Why then did the police raid his house when he was not there? This is questionable behaviour by the police.
Why did the police allow the press to attend any raid? Given the huge press presence this also is questionable.

I couldn't believe that the media actually had helicopters watching the police entering the premises.

I think he probably has grounds for legal action there.

The media seems to have gone very quiet on this one. I think that both they and the police recognise that something improper was done - by them I mean.

If they were allowed to, I expect they'd be coming up with all sorts of "dirt" on him until any kind of legal trial came along! Sadly, even if he comes out of it squeaky clean, it won't be long until they're at it again. I don't blame the papers, still. I blame the people who buy this crap!

I think it more likely that they are scared of a massive libel suit and a trashing in court.

I hope he does it (assuming he IS innocent and I think he likely is)

Well it goes both ways I suppose - if people did not buy em they would quickly go out of business.

I find it difficult to justify not buying a newspaper because some of the articles are trash. To me, keeping abreast of the news is more important than sponsoring trash.

I'll agree with that, so long as one is a little discerning about the paper one reads.

I read the papers but generally the name of the suspect is not revealed until the trial or he is sentenced. But people get the name anyhow, you just have to go to the internet. "Who is the celebrity ...?"

I have not bought a paper newspaper for years but a lot of them are freely available online. Not all - some of the UK dailies are behind a paywall

Selling his house apparently. I can actually see his point - I'd feel very bad if I knew the police had turned over my house in my absence and without my permission

The police went through my house after Tracy died, going through all of the rooms. They took away all of her medications... or at least they thought they had. They missed some of them, which I just took to the chemist's for disposal. At that time Honey slept in her cage, but I'd have wanted to have been there still as she'd been through enough the previous night with all the paramedics and activity going on in front of her.

What causes a person to go after children/minors. I just do not understand why.

Psychological issues are always very hard to understand. When people see the world in a "non-standard" way it is very hard to relate to, even though it all seems normal to them. It's a bit like asking someone who has been blind since birth what it's like to not be able to see. They don't know what it's like to see, so they can't appreciate the difference fully, even though they know what it is. No matter how much they understand the principal, they just can't get the whole thing.
