Apparently Channel FOur is to screen - or has screened, I dunno - a documentary in which a man openly admits that he is sexually attracted to girls as young as four or five. He is adamant that he has never offended and he does not have a criminal record. Not having a TV I won't see the programme but I thought that it was an interesting topic. It's easy I suppose to feel disgust and revulsion and I do but at the same time it must be really quite unpleasant to have those desires and know how wrong they are. My sympathy would evaporate if he were to ever offend (including watching child porn or accessing pictures of such) but as it is I couldn't help feeling sorry for him - and yet would not feel at all comfortable with the idea of him having children of his own or being alone near other peoples'. What do people think?

I accept that there are people who have these desires. I also know that there are many of them who have made a huge mistake, been punished and resolve never to make that mistake again and spend the rest of their lives isolating themselves from a situation where they would have access to children.
I genuinely take my hat off to these people.

I think that this man must be an idiot to expose himself in this way. With some of the vitriol being directed at him already, he will probably need police protection after this programme is aired.

I never thought about that.
You're right Bill, it's a very strange decision

It's the first thing that crossed my mind ... round here he would be run out of his home.
I cannot forgive someone who offends, even just once. They have ruined a life.

It's not a case of forgiving.
I can, however, have some respect for the people who go to extraordinary lengths to ensure they never threaten children again

I think the UK has an unhealthy attitudes towards it, the fear mentality I mean. It was the one thing that struck me when I started visiting a year or so ago, there are no children to be seen, anywhere. Occasionally you can see one or two out with their parents, but where are the kids just out playing with their friends in the park or the playground? Nope, apparently they cannot be allowed out of sight, ever.

Having watched the programme I thought it was well balanced and objective. The man in question has never offended but is calling for help for people like him, people who have these attractions and know that it is utterly wrong and do not want to offend.
If I have one small criticism it would be that this programme presented the problem of paedophilia as being restricted to men.
That aside I thought it was good journalism

Miisa - I dunno where you went but where I live it is crawling with children - often children who are IMO far too young to be out unsupervised (two or three).

She went to the Harry Potter exhibition, and the Natural History Museum, and shops like Hamleys. They were all eerily quiet (except for mini-Miisa) with no children at all (except for mini-Miisa).

When I took my kids to Hamleys it was heaving with kids. And the Natural History Museum. I think playing out in the street depends on the area though - I think it's less prevalent in more affluent areas.

This is residential areas of London. With parks just crying out for hordes of little street urchins all over the place. But no. There were more hardly-supervised dogs than there were children. Yet on weekdays the sounds of the children carry quite a distance from the school yards, so clearly they exist.

School yards? You mean the breeding pens?

They are never seen there either, just heard, so heaven knows what those places are.

I remember watching a talk show and part of it about peadophiles and a woman who was trying to help them. Some of them (I think they might have talked in front of the camera, but were hidden) said they had never actually done anything and knew they would have to live their lives staying away from children. Years ago, on a Christian forum which had taken a bad direction (no, not in that area),a man once asked if Christian men were allowed to feel lustful about young girls. His example was teachers in school and he went on to describe those young girls of 12 to 15, how much more beautiful they were than womenand how male teachers probably couldn't help developing feelings. I found that appalling, especially the fact that theadministrators just watched and didn't do anything to stop him writing.

All child a users attempt to pass off their perversions as being 'only natural'.
Of course it isn't. The natural reaction of any adult towards a child is to protect and nurture.

A friend of mine was a one-time paedophile but I didn't know it at the time. He later reoffended and went to prison for a second time. It was quite a shock.

There are some sick people out there. Worse, they feel that they can justify their actions.
