We have decided to take in another dog who previously belonged to my uncle. He can no longer take care of him, so we offered to adopt him. He's a lovely dog; part lurcher and part something else, quite old and docile. Does anyone have any advice on introducing him to our current dog and cats ? I'm hoping the dog will react well because she is friendly and the cats too because they're used to having a dog around, but any tips on how to make them become best buddies would be appreciated

Is this at uni or at home with family?
How old are the cats and the existing dog? And are they outdoors pets?
I have experience of introducing a kitten to a house with a 7 year old cat. Major standoff for several days, progressing to defence and attack, and finally giving way to being completely happy with each other. Also, now that I think about it, experience of introducing a small-breed (indoors and outdoors) puppy to a house with established cats ... the puppy sees other animals as beings to play with, but the cats see a puppy running towards them as an extreme threat ... and the puppy sees a running away cat as even more exciting!
The cats may be very put out for a while, but give them time, and make sure they have safe places where the new dog can't get to them - including food, water and litter area. If a cat thinks its resources are under threat it will get defensive and territorial. Otherwise, give them chances to sniff the new dog and be sniffed back - and the rest is time!

I saw on some dog program with a famous dog whisperer, dunno his name, that he introduced the dogs to each other on both sides of a glass door, so they could look at each other. Then he would let one dog in a room and then the other to let them get used to the scent, the next time the other way around. Thus he would slowly let them get used to each other.

The new one is the black and white one on the right and the cats are still in a bit of a huff but are fine with being in the same room as the new dog, just not very near him. And I will be going home for Christmas on the 18th when my exams are finished

So everything I know about the dog I've only been told or seen him on Skype; I won't see him properly until the 19th
