I just saw a police man get murdered on the news. Well, not literally, they blacked out the screen at the moment of the killing shot, but then you see the man being dead. It is terrible that this happened. I also think it's terrible that I had to actually see it on the news. Ironically the news paper which was the target had just published a cartoon saying something like terrorists still having till the end of January to wish them all a happy new year.

There's a weird sort of playground mentality to it I think .. do as we say and if you don't, you're in trouble. The odd thing is that if these people hadn't been so adamant that no-one should depict their prophet disrespectfully in the first place, I am sure no-one would have wanted to do so. It's not about deliberate disrespect, it's about a refusal to be dictated to and have one's freedom of expression stifled.

I have to admit that, while I do care about what happened, I keep thinking of other areas where people suffer a lot more and hardly anyone in the western world seems to care. On the news, it was said about two days ago that there was a lot ofsnow in Lebanon and that it was dangerous for thousands of Syrian refugees in the camps because they couldn't protect themselves properly from the cold. Elsewhere (can't even remember where because itwas hardly mentioned on the news) a suicide bomber killed more than a dozen people. But apparently, that doesn't really matter because those are not western countries. :-(

Yes, that concerns me too. I guess it's because a similar sort of thing could happen on our own streets.
My concern is that it has turned into a battle for freedom of speech, when the freedom to create religious hatred is a dubious freedom in the first place.

I don't know. Just tired of this stupidity of it all. Organized religion.

I saw the whole scene on youtube. One of the terrorists walked next to him, and even though the guy had raised his hand asking the terrorist to stop, the later shot him in cold blood, and continued on his way as if nothing happened.

Charlie Hebdo is a satiric magazine. They mock everyone and everything, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Left, Right, public personalities, etc. So they were bound to make caricatures of Muhammad anyway. However, Muslims' insistence that no one depicts their prophet, especially not in a mocking or a disrespectful way, and their overreaction, are only drawing attention to those cartoons and fueling the desire to make more cartoons of the sort.

That country is mostly fucked-up, pretty low on most economic and demographic indexes, and people there make easy recruits for terrorist organizations (it has a few enlightened people though). Just recently Boko Haram killed 2000 people in Nigeria, and they pretty much have their own small Islamic State now. But having a terrorist attack in a Western country is still more shocking because it happens much less frequently and is much less expected.

They were not only attacking Charlie Hebdo but also random Jews. The third terrorist killed four Jews in a kocher shop. In 2012 a terrorist killed three children and a rabbi outside a Jewish school in Toulouse. In 2014 a terrorist killed four people in a Jewish museum in Brussels.
The reason is of course the Israel-Palestine conflict, they make innocent European Jews pay for what the Israeli governement does against the Palestines.

The reason is of course the Israel-Palestine conflict, they make innocent European Jews pay for what the Israeli governement does against the Palestines. Eh, it goes way further back than that. The Koran itself curses Jews on multiple occasions, and there have been many conflicts between Muslims and Jews since the beginning of Islam, one of which involved slaughtering all pubescent males of a Jewish tribe, and enslaving the women and children. (See: the Invasion of Banu Qurayza). The Israeli-Palestinian conflict itself is mainly kindled on both sides by fundamentalist interpretations of holy texts, which, on the Muslim side involves Jew hatred and vilification.
