When, precisely, is the average American on the street going to cotton onto the fact that giving lethal firearms to absolutely anybody who wants them in the name of 'freedom' is a terrible idea?

Yup. I just do not even slightly understand the mentality. Maybe when it's their loved ones people might change their minds. Or maybe they still would not.

Well, if the people in the church had had firearms as well, they could have defended themselves... I have heard people say things like that.

There's a logic to it but in all probability it would make things worse.

There's a logic to it but in all probability it would make things worse. That's what I think as well. But the Facebook friend I deleted recently kept saying things like "The only thing that stops a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun." It never seemed to occur to her that the good man doesn't need a gun if the bad man doesn't have one in the first place.

Also, NRA has the power. The politicians dare not oppose NRA.
Some say that people have as much fire arms in Switzerland and Canada. Well, obviously they can handle it better, less paranoid perhaps? Though I think I have read that men in Switzerland have taken their guns and shot their wives. So "good men" can turn "bad" or depressed or psychotic.
I've read that there are also guns especially designed for children, so that they can shoot and grow up in the "gun culture" from an early age.

My relatives in Canad have firearms. But they are just for hunting and used for hunting only.

My ex-husband has lots of guns as he is into competitive shooting (was a professional sports shooter for a while in his youth and still trains other shooters actively). He used to be very reasonable about it, happy to have every gun owner have a permit and a safe and so on. Used to.
But thanks to having so many pro-gun US friends he has started reposting right-wing/libertarian soundbites and slogans on Facebook and I have to make myself not reply and thus get into petty arguments with him over this stuff.

2190: Gun culture creeps through Europe, Parliament votes on the right to own a gun in British Bill of Rights.

Not gonna happen. The pendulum will swing and the US will tighten up. But a LOT of people are going to die before that happens.

Not so sure. 50 years ago they could have, but they have now arms-raced themselves into a place where there are so many guns all over and being used that it will be impossible to take them from law-abiding people without criminals running rampant. If the general population did stop having any guns the criminals would probably eventually tone it down too, but the middle time could be difficult. And there is actually no guarantee they would cut back on their arsenals, seeing as criminal groups fight each other so much.
That said, I don't think a homeowner having a gun is a reason for a criminal not to burglarize that home, but merely to bring their own and shoot anyone on sight before they get shot. Sad.

I feel for people who think that having a gun is the answer and their safety. Because 1) you have to be willing to use the gun 2) you have to be able to use the gun and 3) you actually have to use it and live with the consequences and as all those soldiers and cops with PTSDs can testify, that latter part is not always easy. Telling yourself you only defended yourself doesn't make it right. Telling yourself if you hadn't done it, someone would have died is not a good argument when battling your conscience and your memories. Guns don't solve problems, they only create them.

If people had living wages or better social security, maybe they'd be less inclined to be burgling each other in the first place.

I suspect this is why black people commit more crimes than white people in America. Their average wages are 13 times less than those of white people, I believe.

Lets put it this way. The south is pro gun no matter what anyone says. We know how quickly the world can change for the worst here. You can ban guns but there will be illegal ones made. Randy and I will not give up ours and hope that well be safe from crazy people that get them in the black market or these southerners. It is not controllable and after what is being said here after this gay rights law passing I'm am a little more Leary. Sometime I wish I lived in the New England area or even California.
