The name of the new ABC has been widely 'leaked' but this is a nice report on the likely person. The priest who is giving the outline on a BBC magazine programme must sum up all the worst nightmares of the reactionary right in England.

The appointed has now been confirmed - on the Downing St., twitter account of all places, and I caught most of the live stream of the press conference from Lambeth Palace (when I should have been cutting the grass). Interesting appointment and certainly one that would not have happened under the old system of Prime Ministerial patronage.

In the past the ABC was appointed by the crown on the advice of the PM. The crown generally did what it was 'advised'. The new system is a commission on which the vacant diocese has six votes out of sixteen, the PM now is simply a postman - another gift of George Brown to the CofE when he was in office.
This means that there is now a realistic debate about who might be best for the job instead of someone getting picked because of who he was related to (Davidson was Tait's son-in-law, Wm. Temple was the grandson of Fred. Temple) or which party he supported in the Lords. The last (very poor) appointment under the old system was Tony Blair insisting that Jones go to Liverpool, very personable lefty but dim, so dim. That more or less settled it for the old patronage system and the next major appointment was Fr. Rowan as ABC - mostly because the diocesan members of the Commission had a very clear vision that he was the best candidate: brave of them to go outside the Cof E of course, because was Abp. of Wales in a separate bit of the communion, a very rare event indeed.

A couple of questions, Fr. G: According to the NY Times this morning, Welby is against gay marriage but for women bishops. So he's somewhere in the middle, theologically speaking?
Since he was Bishop of Durham, replacing NT Wright, I'm wondering if Wright would have been considered for the post if he hadn't stepped down to become an academic?

Tom's age was against him: Fr. Rowan was only 53 when appointed so part of the problem was to find a credible candidate who was in his mid-fifties - that ruled out most of the obvious people, all of whom are older than RDW, including Tom who is two years older than me (can you imagine!).
Bp. Justin is complex, at first sight he looks likes an evoid but then he is in favour of women's ministry, he is a Benedictine Oblate, ethically liberal ... but willing to follow the House of Bishop's agreed line on Gay Marriage, i.e. say you disapprove but do nothing to stop it. The secular press will have real trouble tying him down to their favoured sterotypes. He is very bright - not in the way that Fr. Rowan is - but still very bright.

I heard that Welby was reconsidering his position on gay marriage... What a great name for a cleric, btw: JUSTin WELL-BE.

It's a lost battle - if it ever needed to be fought in the first place - the PM has decided he is going to carry it through and that really is the end of it. People will just have to get over it as far as I can see. My own view is that I am in favour of fidelity and I would much more concerned about people being faithful to each other than I am bothered about the details of their gender.

Ah but as I was told on fb yesterday, God says that marriage is between a man and a woman and nothing is ever going to change that.

How nice to see Shakespeare quoted ... whatever Henry2 said (and it is seriously debated) would not have been that phrase because he spoke Norman French ...

Apparently, Justin Welby's daughter, Katherine, has adopted the title ABCD - Archbishop of Canterbury's Daughter. She says she always wanted a title.

XYZ are a challenge we shall have to rise to.
Ms Welby is an honourable tradition of ABCD's - many of whom ended up marrying other bishops, or even - in Miss Edith Tait's case - an ABC (Davidson). Oh and there was the Victorian ABCD who set up home with the widow of the bishop of London ...

I just thought of a way of playing Quoits rudely... certainly inappropriate for a thread about an archbishop!
